THANK GOD, I'm not the only one who can't stand the Strokes or the White Stripes....and here I was worried it was just me. Tho personally I rate the Strokes far below the White Stripes....to me, all their music I've ever heard sounded like it was building to a climax/crescendo/whatever the appropriate musical term is, that never comes.

As far as underrated, there are too many bands/performers to count. A couple that come to mind are Matisyahu (but he is picking up some radio time lately), Dropkick Murphy's (fucking best concert you will ever see in your life), and In Flames (aggression filled faux-metal at its best).
Oh, and I disagree on the point made about Sum 41. While it may be the closest thing to "pop" I listen to, they genuinely have feeling behind their music, IMO.
I gave this a bit of thought because I didn't want to just give bands that were already mentioned.
Overrated:
blink 182
Crossfade
Not too say that I haven't liked either of those bands at one point. Both are on my iPod, but Crossfade is really generic sounding, and blink 182 is well..... blink 182.

Wait, blink 182 is what? Pioneers in pop-punk? A group that actually writes their own lyrics? A pop-punk-ish band who hasn't changed their style(s) because a label said to?
Yes, they're a bit old now, but good stuff came from them back in the day.

Cool, they write their own lyrics... as they should. That doesn't change the fact that after all these years they can still only play the most basic guitar riffs. And while I've only seen them performing live on television, I continue to hear how bad their vocals sound in person. Gee, I wonder why their only live album is no longer in print?

Oh man, this after I agreed with you about Dillinger.
Pioneers in pop-punk. So you're saying they should be praised for bringing to popularity one of the most talentless and annoying music genres to ever exist? You're saying they should be praised for writing their own lyrics when that should be the norm?
And no, nothing good came from them. They have less than 5 good songs, and that's over what, like 6 albums? Wow, impressive track record.

give them credit where credit is due, they do what they want, they say they arent good but got signed anyway, and yet people still buy all their shit. So they are respectable from all those points, but i agree a good portion of their music is shit.
and they are pretty good live, put on a good show, other than music
EDIT: i saw them back on the pop disaster tour with saves the day and Green Day

3 men willing to run around naked in a music video...what more could you want?

It is all relative my friend. Don't get all up in arms. Although writing lyrics should be the norm, it isn't. Particularly in the pop-punk category writing your own lyrics tends to be unheard of.
And yes, 3 note power chords and easily reproduced riffs are inherently pop-punk.
Finally, to be honest, I'm really a fan of cheshire cat, dude ranch, and enema of the state. Nothing made before 1999. Now they have too much of an emo sound that I'm not a big fan of.
