Myself and a couple of my friends have started watching anime. I'm curious what some of your favorites are. So far we've watched 4 series:

Outlaw Star
Escaflowne
Neon Genesis Evangelion
FLCL

I've liked all four (although I didn't understand FLCL until I read up on wikipedia). We plan to watch the two Record of Lodoss War series and Trigun (and Cowboy Bebop if we can find some DVDs of it, I may just buy it). That's what we have as far as series. I'm borrowing some of my brother's stuff and he has several independent movies (like Spirited Away, Grave of the Fireflies, Nausica, etc) but I'm looking more for series rather than stand alone movies.

Thoughts and opinions?

Trigun is a good one to start off with, and everyone should see it at least once. After that, it depends on what you're looking for, whether it's more action, or comedy, or whatever.

Looking at your list, though, Full Metal Panic and Dual! seem to be right up your alley.

Trigun and Record of Lodoss War are fuckin sweet. Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop are awesome as well. That about is all the series I've seen.
I have Serial Experiments Lain but haven't watched it yet.

Trigun and Bebop are both very good choices. Since most of the series you listed are Sci-fi, Mecha, you may also want to look into the Gundam universe. 0083: Stardust Memory, and Gundam Wing are my favorite series. Char's counter attack is a very good movie, based on the original Gundam. If you want somthing sci-fi and a little brighter tone, Martian Successor Nadesico is a good series. If you liked the continous plot depth and development Eva had, Serial Experiments Lain may be worth a shot. You can always ask the Anime Club for suggestions. Plus they have a very large collection of anime avaliable for check-out.

If by "throw out" you mean "throwing it out of the ring of good anime."

I took it more as "throw it out into a garbage can", but that works as well. In the Sci-fi/Mecha vein, Vandread is also a pretty fun series.

I'm not saying that DBZ is great by any means.. but it sure was fun, and if it wasn't for DBZ, I don't think anime would be near as big in the US..

True, but the US version is re-targeted toward a much younger audience than Sonicpulsar's previous selections. I don't think it's a good candidate.

And don't forget about Adult Swim. Which also spawned the formation of Miguzi and the restructure of Toonami.

I'm also going to add Ghost in the Shell, all three movies (the third was just announced for US release) and both season of the TV series.

I've heard the GitS sequel sucked, but was a hell of a lot better than the atrocious TV series. Any credence to this?

My only problem with Adult Swim is that I absolutely hate to start a series in midseason. That and I can usually get it and watch it without commercials. Coupled with the fact I have an 8:00 class on MWF....

I liked 'em all. I just wish they had stuck with the Fuchikomas for the TV series. The Tachikomas just look...klunky, I guess. Not nearly as streamlined.
