To Ben Laden:
Not really saying that your genre's are wrong, because when it boils down to it.. it's a really subjective choice, but I consider DEP more mathcore/thrash and definitely would put Isis and maybe Pelican into the progressive/post-hardcore genre.. Apocalyptica is an amazing choice though (I think they're newer stuff suck though)
Don't know why you're missing Norma Jean though. Might want to check out Lakes - Photograph EP, pretty amazing stuff. Sorta in the vein of Copeland, but better vocals.
I'll have to add
Metal-Core:
Every Time I Die, Underminded, Chiodos, UnderOath
Alternative/Punk or Pop/Rock:
Say Anything (amazing band, check them out!)
I'll probably back adding more when I really get around to thinking about it.

But Apocalyptica's older stuff was all Metallica covers. I like the sound of their somewhat original stuff.
Not all of it. In fact, Cult I believe is all original stuff. Basically everything since Reflections (2003) has been some major crap. The band isn't just the same without Max.

Mathcore is a sub-genre of metalcore, and I didn't want to list a whole other genre just because of DEP, hence the classification.
And Isis and Pelican are both post-rock, unquestionably. Post-rock typically has progressive tendencies, so I understand you there. And while post-rock and post-hardcore share some traits, they both fall much farther into the post-rock category.
And what I've heard of Norma Jean bored me. I may check them out again though.

Definitely go for their 1st album Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child pretty amazing stuff.. Memphis will be Laid to Waste is probably my favorite song on that album.. especially when Aaron Weiss comes in.
And good call on the genres. I've been on a mission to get my music catalouged correctly so.. it's been an interesting learning experience so far.

Yeah, it's cool. I love discussing music, and I'm a huge musical elitist so generally it's a pretty rare occurance that someone one-ups me on music/genre knowledge. You weren't far off in your thinking though.

I like Queens of the Stone Age as well. Also recently I have been into Kamelot, Guano Apes, and a bit of Killswitch Engage.
QOTSA are really good live. I enjoyed every song they played when I saw them, whereas when I'm listening to their albums I pretty much just have a set list of songs that I like by them and don't listen to anything else by them.

I hear they play a pretty hard set live, and that their shows are a lot of fun.

Yeah. They're REALLY loud, like even for a concert.
