ooo Mahavishnu Orchestra...good stuff. If you like that, I'd suggest Tony Williams' Lifetime - Emergency! You might like Weather Report - Heavy Weather too.

I think it MIGHT be safe to say that I know the most about jazz here at UMR, so if you want to know anymore about it, let me know.

Absolutely. Fire away. I love settling down to smooth jazz, and just get blown away by how people can make coherent chord structures while improvising in quicker jazz like some can do.

Minus the Bear for some pretty technical post rock. Made up of some former Botch [pioneers of mathcore genre] members.

The Album Leaf is a good post rock that is a lot more instrumental and epic.. closer to Explosions in the Sky..

and since I mentioned them earlier Botch nice math/metalcore.. check out the We Are The Romans album..

Every Time I Die for some really great metalcore.. it's more melodic screaming than most scream bands.. I like it a lot..

Well, right now I'm digging Symphony X, Pelican, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but I'm trying to sample everything. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I noticed Metallica wasn't in the big list, but I guess that's kind of obvious.

It's not included in the big list for numerous obvious reasons.

I'm really liking Isis...I've been looking for something in the same vein as Tool.

Ehhhh.......I don't know if you're saying similar to Tool or similar to ISIS. If it's the former, I don't really know what you're talking about. If it's the latter......I agree. Pelican is really mellow though compared to the other two, while still having that noisy wall-of-sound.

I would also mention that last.fm is a goldmine for finding new music.

Based on the one song I just heard, I would also recommend Blind Guardian in the metal category. You have to love a metal band inspired by JRR Tokein and other fantasy authors.

Eh, I'm going to get super flamed for this, but I'm not a big LOTR fan.

Anyway, also really like Mahavishnu Orchestra.

EDIT: Did I just crap on my own thread???

I second that. last.fm is fantastic. I always like good old word-of-mouth though.
