Almost never sprint in basketball? When I play full court, I'm sprinting down the court at least once every 4-5 trips. Not to mention constantly changing directions, cutting, chasing people around on defense, etc.
The more I think about it, the more I'm convincing myself. I don't play a lot of volleyball, but it seems that there is more inactive time than there is active when you take into account time between points, whereas in basketball you're practically always moving.
Ohh dear god how is this a legitimate piece of discussion. Giving random opinions about what you think about bball and vball is absolutely pointless and has no legitimate bearing on anything but your opinion and experience.
Which is more of a workout? Depends on how you play them.

Think about how each game is played. Volleyball, when it is 6v6, is purely a positional game. Meanwhile, in Basketball, you have to run 3/4 of the court every minute or two. That's not including if you make a steal and go in for a layup, or chase someone down who stole the ball from you. Sure, there are times in volleyball that someone has to go sprinting for a miss-hit ball, but basketball's back and forth running easily overtakes that.

I find volleyball more strenuous.
If you play at a higher level of competition in volleyball, even 6v6 indoor, every player is sprinting forward and backward and aligning to a formation to defend the other team's attack, every 5 seconds, and if in the front row, jumping 2 or 3 times in 5 seconds.

I would say at a recreational/student level basketball is going to be more strenuous. From the professional level, from what I've seen laying on my couch watching the tv, volleyball seems overall more strenuous. I'd say the distances in basketball are more, but the players mostly seem to be jogging. Of course, if I were 10 feet tall I'd be able to do a slow jog at 10 mpg too.

Miles per gallon? So people that are 10 feet tall are like SUVs?
