Not sure if this belongs here, but I couldn't see it belonging in any of the other groups.

I'm building a really nice desk, no particle board, no concrete blocks, and no 2x4s. But I can not find anyone around here that carries the lumber I need. I've tried Lowes and Meeks, but they mostly only have construction stuff. They both carry the 1x4, 1x6, and 1x8s that I need, but neither have the 2x2s (or 8/4 x 6).

So, if anyone knows where I can buy this stuff, I could use some help.

My mom sells wholesale wood from the lumber mills all around here, I suppose I could give her a call and ask her about it, but from what I gather, you don't really have a large enough order to get something direct from a mill. I'll try and find out.

What kind of wood are you wanting?

I was thinking pine, but oak or popular would work fine too. I doubt I can use enough to get it ordered from a mill. I also wonder if the wood is rough when it comes that way, because I can not afford a planer at this time.

Yeah I'm not sure, I think it depends on the mill. I believe some have the planers at the mill and will plane it down for you, but at a higher price. As for orders, I really don't know, I'll have to ask her. I know I've ordered some oak and cedar to make a desk and chest respectively, so I think she can do small orders. I'll have to check, she might have just been doing it because it was for me.

They generally use the best wood and I am sure they could sell you just the raw lumber if you want.

By the way, if you want to make a really nice desk, don't use pine. Use oak, walnut or other hardwood as these won't dent, scratch, etc. nearly as easily as pine and will look good for years to come.
