For those that know what Autocross is, its that time of the month. A small group of my friends and i partake in this fun automotive hobby and put forth an open invite to join us at the race this sunday down in Ozark, Mo (like a 1/2 mile from the Lambert's down there). It's fun stuff.

For those that dont know what autocross is, i'll try to summarize it. Basically a course, outlined with street cones and chalk, is set up in a large lot (in our case, a baseball field parking lot), and its a race against time to get through the course as quickly as possible. Your times are then compared to cars in your class and similar classes. Its a legal way to race your car and its really fun shit.

Here's a little helpful flash video put together by one club.

Certain rules apply, like a helmet, signed waiver (available at the track), if under 18 then a parent/guardian is needed, no pets, etc etc etc.

For more information you can check out: http://omrsolo2.org/solo2_novice.html

$30 to drive if you're a non-SCCA member, $20 if you are a member. There arent any requirements on driving. You can come down and ride along with with people if you'd like simply for the thrill or to see what its like before trying it with your own car.

We havent finalized plans on when we'll be going down there yet, but usually we will meet at my house (across from Kroger's) and drive down on the morning of the event. Directions to the lot should be on the website, but are some quick directions:
I-44 towards springfield, looking for HW65. When you see HW65, take it south for a little while. While on 65-South, keep an eye out for the Lambert's exit, there will be signs along the way. i cant remember the exit number. Anyway, hang a left at the off ramp towards the Lambert's restaraunt. Hang a right at the light at the intersection that Lamberts is on and follow that road until the end. The baseball field and race course are at the end, you cant miss it.

here's a video shot from inside my car, just to get a perspective on what's going on:

and now, pictures!

as far as trucks go, you're limited to small 2WD pickup... 4x4's, lifted trucks, roll over prone vehicles arent allowed...

Is there a "street stock" class? I.e. Can I race my old beater FWD Buick? And if so can I be at all competitive?

It handles rather well and it's all right on acceleration but it ain't no derby vehicle...

depends on how much of a beater it is. They do safety and tech inspections to try and prevent any accidents from happening with bad mechanics and parts and such.

Autocrossing is fun, i recommend giving it a shot to anyone who like driving! I used to do it a lot more, but now i am too modified to be competitive in the class i would have to run..

Wow, I really want to try that. I used to do the High-Speed Touring/Test and Tune at Hallett a couple years ago, and it was a blast (especially for less than $100/day... about 1 hour and 15 minutes of hard driving). My car was weak compared to the others out there, but the fun made it completely worth it... I'm definitely going to try autocross, as I've always wanted to.

A little bit off topic, but i was wondering if Hallett was the place i hear about the people go to to drag race also? I hear there is a place about 40 mins away with a strip, but i havent ever heard where it is. I know there is GIR in STL, thats where i normally go when i am home, but a place closer would be nice, i just didnt know if this Hallett place was it..?

There's a drag strip in Tulsa, OK, that is about 40 miles from Hallett at the Tulsa Speedway. I've never been there, as circuit racing is much more fun and my car wouldn't put up much fight in a straight on drag in its condition.

Well, 40 miles past Hallett is prllly further than it is to go to Gateway, so nevermind, but good to know.

here's a video that was shot in my car, so you can get a first person view of what's going on versus still images.
