Dear Campus Community:
I have been informed of recent behaviors and activities on our campus that do not reflect Missouri S&T’s values or the respect that all people and groups deserve. On March 9, 2009, some representatives of student groups participating in the St. Pat’s Follies used offensive and degrading language about racial and ethnic groups, women, and religious beliefs. On March 31, 2009, another ugly incident occurred in the parking lot outside the Havener Center in which racial insults were made against a group of Missouri S&T students. These behaviors and activities are disturbing and unacceptable on this campus.
Missouri S&T must provide an atmosphere conducive to diversity and inclusion, one that fosters innovation and creativity. To take advantage of the enormous potential of all people, we must respect and capitalize on the similarities as well as differences between individuals, systems and cultures. Specific violations of the University of Missouri Standard of Conduct are addressed through the student conduct process in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The recent incidents are being reviewed through this process and our Affirmative Action office.
To ensure that we continue to manifest the value of inclusiveness clearly expressed in our strategic plan, I am creating the Chancellor’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusion. The committee of students, faculty, and staff will: (1) develop recommendations that define diversity and inclusiveness consistent with the university’s values; (2) assess the campus and identify impediments to diversity and inclusion; and (3) develop and propose a plan to eliminate impediments to diversity and inclusion. I will present the committee’s recommendations to our campus community—students, staff, and faculty—for comment and then will immediately move on developing an appropriate implementation plan.
Let me be clear: attacks on individuals or groups based on their race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin will not be tolerated on this campus. The incidents I referred to above were personally offensive to the majority of our community. They do not represent the values of Missouri University of Science and Technology.
Sincerely, John F. Carney III Chancellor Missouri S&T (formerly University of Missouri-Rolla) Rolla, MO 65409-0910 573-341-4114 jfc3@mst.edu

I remember a bit of Jew-bashing at some of the gonzo events, but that was in good fun. Some of the intermission jokes were crude, but not oppressively offensive. I'd say someone was probably where they shouldn't have been for having too thin of skin.
However, if something serious did happen, such as a group of people harassing a lone victim, then my statement shouldn't be applied. What I saw was, to quote Douglas Adams, "mostly harmless."

I doubt what happened at the follies had much to do with it, but what had happened at Havener was over the line a bit. Long story short from a black friend who was involved. It was a group of, I'm just going to go ahead and call them morons since I don't know what else to call them, started calling my friend and two/three others, niggers a few times and started cussing them out after simply walking passed them. Then when one of my friend's friends started to go after them (all of them then chased after him), the group doing the calling ran/jumped in a car and sped off.
At least, that's what I think the e-mail's refering to since this just happened within the last week.

I seem to also recall a few n-bombs being dropped, and maybe one or two other racial slurs along with some bashing on international students... Most of it seemed to be "in good fun", but I also seem to recall at least one instance where I had to wonder about their intentions.

Hell, I'm Jewish and love a good Jew joke (especially the Holocaust ones. I know, I'm terrible). I don't know what was said, but someone probably just needed to grow a pair and learn to take a joke. Rolla has like what, 3 Jews? It figures all 3 of them would be the serious Sheila Broflovski ones that can't laugh at anything.

To some people, there is a difference between hearing a good racial/religious joke from a friend and hearing it from a stranger. Personally, I wouldn't think a Greek house supposedly being respectable and chivalrous would want to rag on different races and religions in a public surrounding like that. But then again, those principles are probably only for memorization and initiation purposes; politics, ya know?
Either way, I'm not too offended by a racial joke, but I'm also not one for being distasteful. There's a time and place for everything and that was not it.

There's a difference between making racist jokes and going up to a table of black students at Havener, calling them niggers, and then being a pussy and running. They knew they were being douches, cause if they didn't, they wouldn't have run and would have gotten their asses kicked (rightfully).

The word "bi-partisan" usually means some larger-than-usual deception is being carried out.

I agree with you there. I was referring to the jokes that supposedly went on at Gonzo. Going up to a group of black people and calling them niggers isn't right at all even if you are joking.

I also agree. Personally, I don't think using that word at all is appropriate. I hate the n word above all others and using it in any conversation is insulting. I can fully understand how these events could be offensive to people who weren't even involved.
