Post subject:  In-School work?
Looks like I'll be making my glorious return to Rolla come fall, and will be doing so with very little financial support. So I'm asking the working community out there who's the best to work for? What I'm looking for is a job that pays well enough to make rent ($500/month) and can accomodate someone taking approximately 9-12 hours of school.

Driving a school bus pays pretty well. You'll start out at about $15/hr once you have a route ($8+/hr while you are training) and as long as you drive twice a day every school day, you should make about $900/month before taxes for working 15 hours a week (during training, it is about $540+ before taxes), and training usually doesn't take more than a month. If you want this job, try to make sure you are available from 6:00AM to 8:15AM and 2:45PM to 4:45PM for the best opportunity to work.

A small start-up cost is a physical (up to about $30, but gets reimbursed) and an FBI background check ($52, but reimbursed once hired). They will give you more details about it when you talk to them. If you don't have a CDL, they train you for that as well, and you have to front the cost of the test, but that also gets reimbursed. They are always desperate for new drivers, so I can almost guarantee you a job unless you have a felony or 17 speeding tickets in your personal history.

This is just one option, but good luck. It has worked for me for about 3 years.

How flexible are they on schedules? I think I could probably drive most mornings, and possibly the afternoons.

Also, how terrible are the kids? Be honest.

If you're not much on sleeping in, I would recommend Fedex or UPS. I worked for UPS in their distribution center on Highway V and found it pretty satisfying. Hours: 4:15-8AM M-F, and they did work with people who had to leave for 8AM classes. You get weekends off for fun and merriment, and the work doesn't interfere with classes or homework during the week. It's somewhat physically demanding, but you do get in great shape fast. You're basically being paid to work out. UPS is Union, and Fedex is Non-Union, if that changes your opinion of either. If I remember right I started out at about $9/hr back in 2007, so the starting wages are probably higher now. And there's no kids throwing spit balls at you.

Since you start out as a substitute driver, the kids are usually terrible. I don't recommend this job if you hate kids, or have a low tolerance for stupidity or noise. Also, I'd recommend not spending too much time around the geriatric drivers. Their bleak outlook on life would make Douglas Adam's robot feel better about its own life.

Define terrible. Use examples. You've got to have some interesting stories you haven't shared.

Remember all the shit you pulled when you rode a bus? Well, more parents care less about their kids now than they did then, so stuff like this happens:

)fist fights over the tops of seats (happened on my first day) that result in at least one bloody nose,
)throwing full water bottles out of windows onto passing cars,
)a random blood-curdling scream for no obvious or particular reason, other than to be annoying,
)students lying about the correct route to follow so that they get home faster than normal (this usually doesn't work, because you do have instructions from the normal driver, but sometimes those instructions suck because they look like they were written by a kindergartner)
)one or two little kids (7 or younger) that can't speak well because their parent is addicted to some sort of controlled substance, that decides to share his life story with you, but all you get out of it is the random mention of having 2 moms or dad in jail or somebody killed someone but can't piece it together because the kid is so screwed up by his parent(s) that he'll never be normal (true story)
)The shit these kids find to throw to the front of the bus, what the hell?

On the plus side:
)you get to yell at these kids (productively)
)you can look like you are going to strangle them if they don't straighten up, and possibly scare them into believing in Jesus or something
)"Don't leave marks"
)You haven't driven unless you have managed to power slide a school bus. (done!, with the assistance of ice, though)
)You get lots of criticism on how well you can drive a bus from your 37+ inexperienced critics behind your seat. I consider this a plus, because I'll pull stuff on purpose just to see what they will say, like hitting a curb in a turn with the inside back wheels, or something similar.
)Most kids aren't that bad, a select few can make it seem that way though.

By the way, if you are driving the bus, you are responsible for keeping it clean. So when a kid is forced to go to school by his lazy, ignorant parents even though he authentically has a fever of 102.8 and then halfway to school decided he'd like to see what he had for breakfast again, you'll have to clean it up. So having a strong stomach might be a good attribute to have as well.

Also, after everything I have seen, I think that half of these kids that are stupid are that way because of their parents. Who the hell thinks it is a good idea to throw a full water bottle onto a car driving next to you?

Yeah I'm in the same boat as the OP. I'll be looking for a part time job if my research assistantship doesn't work out. I'll look into UPS/FedEx. I hated riding the school bus, there's no way I'm going to drive one.
