I was hanging out around campus the other day, and a buddy said that he heard there will be a limit on printing on campus this year. I was wondering if anybody can confirm this.

I think they should have something in place, I see a lot of people waster paper, not just students.
Alot of other universities charge per print.

I feel like this was discussed extensively in a different thread, but I can't find it.

If I do, I'll edit this post... unless someone else finds it first

edit: found it

The system is supposed to be implemented for the start of the fall semester. The website for the interface can be found at papercut.mst.edu

I kind of dig the interface and 100% agree with what they are doing.

I actually hate it. Yeah, great, it's green, omg, look at how polluting you are. Who gives a shit?! If I need a fucking page for homework or studying or WHATEVER, then who cares!! It helps me learn? What, do you just want me to carry around 15 fucking portable LCDs to pull up any pages I might need? I'm the kind of person who needs ink and paper to help me focus. If I'm going to read something, scrolling doesn't work unless it's an article.

Not saying I don't agree with having a "quota" or whatever they're calling it now, but the stats just piss me off.

Where's the text explaining the policy? I looked at the print accounting interface and didn't find any explanation of the policy, and I couldn't find any mention of it at Helpdesk. I saw that I have $25, but I don't know what that means or how far that will get me. Are they going to provide explanation in the coming days before this thing goes live? Is it in fact live right now?

I want to know if professors have a similar interface. You know the ones that give EVERY STUDENT a 40-50 page handout PER CLASS period. I know I've bitched about this before, but when I see a professor walk into class with more than 4 reams of paper in handouts (most all of which are slides he could have easily posted on blackboard) it just ticks me off.

I actually like the idea of limiting how much each of us can print. Otherwise I'm paying for the jerkoffs who can't put their flyers in the e-connection, and the idiots who feel the need to print every god-damned thing they have on their computer. I don't think the system is designed to get more money out of us, but rather to say "this is how much of your student fees go to printing. Use it wisely".* As long as that $25 gets me far enough, I'm happy.

*Now if only I could get the federal government to do this with welfare...

From what I heard, you will have ~400 pages. They will have rates for color and gray-scale. The number only apply to CLC lab printers. Department printers will not be affected, because that department already pays for that paper and toner used. The program is supposed to keep track of how much you print anywhere, but wont charge you if you print to your department printer, because you are already paying for it. So this probably won't help with teacher wasteful printing unless the department does something.

It hardly seems fair to students who have to print out massive handouts for class versus ones that are printing out garbage. Or what about student workers that have to print out things? I'd have been pissed if half my RA fund went to work-related print jobs in the CLC.

I like the concept, certainly, but I wonder if this is the best solution? What is stopping people from printing out the extra bouncy codes for Dead or Alive 4 on the department printers?

Solution: Don't print in the CLC. As a student employee, you are given access to departmental printers, and they don't cost you anything from your quota to print to.

What departmental printer are RAs printing to exactly?

Oh Snap! I misread that. You wrote RA, but I read TA for whatever reason. Nevermind, that would suck. But I am sure that if you talk to the people at the walk-in center, they have some sort of plan for those situations. They are definitely in the minority.

Depending on the dorm you're in; let say TJ, try printing to the duty room printer (if it still exists) or try printing to the RD office. These "office" printers are not restricted.
