your probably all have gotten or will get this e-mail, but wtf? Admitting to fucking up and all they can offer is a discounted experian credit monitoring service?
Quote:
January 19, 2010
Dear student:
Early last week, the University of Missouri mailed Internal Revenue Service 1098-T forms to our students via U.S. mail. On January 14th we became aware that, for some of the forms, the Social Security Number on the form was partially or fully viewable through the envelope window.
I am sending this letter to all students who received 1098-T forms since we do not know which students might have been affected. You can determine if your SSN was viewable by visually inspecting how your form aligns with the envelope window.
If your SSN was indeed viewable and you are concerned about the risk of identity theft, you may want to monitor your credit which can be accomplished by contacting one of the national credit agencies: Experian at 888-397-3742, Equifax at 800-525-6285 or TransUnion at 800-680-7289.
The security of our students’ personal information is a top priority for us, and we deeply regret that this occurred. We are reviewing our processes and those of our vendors in an effort to prevent this from happening in the future.
Sincerely, Natalie “Nikki” Krawitz Vice President for Finance & Administration

Since I am not a student anymore, does that mean that I can't get the discounted rate even if I wanted it?
"We basically showed your information to identity thieves and potentially ruined your credit for the next ten years of your life just before you got a chance to take your first step into the real world, sorry. Here's a sticker. Feel better?"
That is all I saw in that letter.

Out of curiosity, what would be a better solution in your opinion?

Umm....FREE credit monitoring for a while to make sure we're not victims of identity theft? I don't see how that was hard to see.

Well if anything happens to my credit, I know who to sue. Also - we should have free credit monitoring, not this "sorry, won't happen again!" bullshit.

It blows my mind that their idea of damage control for this is to inform us that there is a pre-existing discount offered. Neither the e-mail nor the page seem to indicate that they're actively working on something to compensate for this.
How is this terrible a response to the fiasco even possible? They should be offering free checking for the next few years at a minimum. Further still, it looks like the monthly cost of this thing regularly is $4.95 as compared to the discounted $3.46, so it's not like it's even that much in savings.

The nice thing about credit monitoring is that it only lets you know there's a bomb after it's gone off. You can still spend years trying to clear your record. The credit monitoring only lets you know after it's happened and before the goons knock at your door to shoot out your kneecaps. It also won't help you if they take your SSN and undergo a major surgery in your name and forget to pay the bill - that sort of thing doesn't go onto your credit report until it goes to collection.
