I don't think they are accepting anymore people for the mug club right now. Also the bartenders are nice unless you are a douche.

They get kinda grouchy if you want to pay with a credit card (even if you're opening a tab). I still tip in the jar with cash, but I just don't carry $40 with me everywhere I go.

1) The bartenders are NOT nice, EVER. They're LESS of an asshole if they know you, but they're still assholes. The only decently friendly one there is the chick that got hired somewhat recently. It's part of the Grotto experience, and I couldn't really care less, but saying they're anything except a bunch of dicks is just flat out false.
Corollary: If you are Theta Tau or St. Pat's of course you get the royal treatment.

2) They don't accept anyone for the mug club anymore because it's too shady/too much work for them. That means they would have to keep some way of keeping track of how much you've drank. I've probably earned a mug twice over but don't have one because if the Grotto is anything, it's lazy.

I'll tell you from experience, if you're a Theta Tau or board rep, you get no better treatment. It just means they know what name to bitch at you.

As for cash: they know that when you run a credit card, they lose a percentage to the credit card company. Anyways cash is always gold. It means they don't have to keep track of your name, your card, how much you're drinking, etc.

I dunno if they are accepting mug club anymore. But here's the basic process:

You need 150 points.
Mixed Drinks (including dollar wells tuesday) - 1 pt
Domestics (Bud, Bud Light, etc) - 1 pt
Crafts (Shocktop, Killians, etc) - 2 pts
Guinness - 3 pts.

[EDIT] Oh yeah, you only earn points by the pint. Thats why its more expensive when you're earning it than if you buy by the pitcher.

When I joined last semester it cost 3 bucks to join. Once you get your 150 points, wait till the owner is working and he'll give you a number. You go to Kent's and fill out an order, it costs like 8 bucks for the mug with the number and grotto emblem, then 6 for a picture (crest, symbol, whatever) if its already made or 50 bucks to have a new one made, and then 50 cents per letter for writing. I've seen people who have a shit ton of stuff and it cost them $35 and I've seen a couple that cost $10-15. There used to be a long waiting list for getting the mug once you've earned it, but I just thought it would be easier to get it myself. In my opinion they don't owe you for your patronage, you're getting the mug for the discounts and novelty.

Be courteous with your bartender, don't ask how many points you have all the time, don't worry too much about your points when it's busy, and pay in cash and most likely they will throw extra points your way. Be a dick, a drunk ass, or just generally find some way to piss off their hair trigger attitude and they MIGHT take some away. Its a rather delicate and, at times, interesting game. When its not busy or they are just watching tv, thats the time to ask about points. If it is busy, they will usually throw you a random number of points at the end of the night. Oh and if you enquire about the mug club, save yourself the trouble and ask when its not busy at all.

Instead of doing all that, you could regularly go to a bar where they're nice, and be nice to them, and tip very well. You'll start getting drinks for less. It's an un-vicious cycle, you tip well, they're nicer to you and give you stronger/bigger drinks, so you have more money/reason to tip well...

Eh, to each his own.

I like going to the grotto because its within walking distance to home, I know the bartenders and they know what I drink (I rarely order anymore), the novelty of having the mug is great, I don't ever deal with townies because it is pretty much a purely college bar, there is a lot to do entertainment wise, and it is hella cheap.

I live next door to Brunos. The only time I might visit the Grotto is when I'm on campus, but they aren't open so I drink at the Locker Room when I have a break on campus

I guess they all have pros and cons. Personally, I usually just end up going to Bruno's on Tuesday for trivia and then probably the Grotto most other occasions. Thanks for the input!
