When I left campus at 10am there were 3 cop cars and an ambulance at the Miner Inn. I picked up my roomie and brought him to campus 5 minutes later and there were 8 cop cars and more arriving on scene.
Supposedly it's NOT a student that has barricaded themselves in an apartment (according to the alert email).
Oh well, at least the forthcoming rumors should prove entertaining.
Heard a call go out on the police scanner shortly after the "alert" e-mail that the suspect was in custody and being transported to PCRMC. So he was either A) being checked out for psychological reasons B) being treated for injuries when the police broke the standoff or C) being treated for self-inflicted wounds, possibly related to the shots heard or a combination of A, B, and C.
I'm surprised they didn't take this as important enough to merit an actual campus alert message. Gunshots across the street from campus sounds an awful lot like the incidents that led up to the Virginia Tech massacre that inspired the system in the first place. Nothing came of it at least... this time.

Info on the Rolla PD facebook page, including pictures. Gunshots were supposedly beanbag rounds. Makes me wonder though...when a situation like this occurs, how do they decide who's in charge of facebooking it?

Those three numbers that are at the end of the facebook post are DSN numbers ([something] serial number), if you listen to a scanner, you will here those numbers used by everyone to identify themselves, unless they are dispatching, then you will here the name of their dispatch.

Good lord...

Family members feared that the male was suicidal and requested assistance. 18 officers responded including the SWAT team and negotiator.
18 officers including a SWAT team? Srsly?
Step 1: Battering ram (or a swift kick or a light sneeze, if its the Miner Inn) to break down door and take suspect by surprise. Step 2: Immediately follow the breach by a) flashbang or b) volley of rubber bullets.. or c) both (why the hell not). Step 3: Kick suspects ass (before there's any witnesses on scene) for being such a tard. Done.
Uh, maybe I don't know enough about the situation, but because if he had a hostage, a quick "surprise" like a battering ram might have just left everyone with an innocent dead person.

Wow, way to be a cold heartless bastard... Advocating the use of force which may result in the death of an innocent civilian. I can understand some collateral damage, but your recomended technique just sounds thoughtless and inefficient.

Does it trouble anyone else that the police are posting real-time information about their current activities for any and all to read? Case details and everything? They were posting about how they were looking for a suicidal chick, and they're currently "checking parks and business parking lots". Why would you reveal that little tidbit to the general public?
The other thing I saw was one of the townies making the comment "The police do know what they are doing...Just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean it is wrong......" That's the spirit.
Quick information is one thing. This is a little excessive.

You know, I was wondering that too. The only thing I can figure is that they're not posting enough detailed information. Really no more than if you were at the scene, and asked an officer what was happening as you walked by.
