Looks like a lot of flat panel antennas have been popping up on stop lights over the past month or so, any ideas? |

Yeah. These are used for the signal controllers to communicate with each other (basically a long range WiFi network). This means that MoDOT is probably about to coordinate their signal timings so that traffic runs smoother along 63 - basically so that you will be pushed through with a "platoon" of cars and in theory, hit all the green lights, or most of them depending on the signal timings. Timings are pre-programmed and adjust throughout the day(rush hours). To keep traffic moving efficiently it's important that these signals can communicate with each other, so that when one gets out of sync it can get back in the proper cycle. (i.e. pushing the pedestrian walk button can knock a signal out of sync for a few cycles). In St. Louis, or other metro areas, MoDOT has fiber in place along the major interstates and thoroughfares to tie in all of their signals to their network. They can then be monitored and modified remotely. On roads that are too far away from the fiber runs to justify running fiber to them, they will oftentimes be linked using these wireless "flat panel antennas" The bandwidth over the wireless is obviously slower, but it's capable of monitoring and adjusting timings, just not really enough for streaming video (think gatewayguide.com) Since there is no traffic management center for the Rolla area, these signals are probably just communicating with the other signals along the road through Rolla.
