In case anyone hasn't checked their MinerMail (or whatever variation you have)...

http://it.mst.edu/googleapps.html

Quote:
Gmail is now open to students who wish to opt-in to our Gmail pilot program! IT has also created a new tool to assist you in moving your old mail into your new Gmail account from Outlook Live or Miner Mail.

To get started with Gmail, visit http://it.mst.edu/googleapps.html and follow the registration instructions. If you haven't set up your Google Apps account, you'll need to do so first. It takes only a few minutes to set up your Google Apps account and start using Gmail.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR STUDENTS SWITCHING FROM OUTLOOK LIVE:

If you use Outlook Live and switch to Gmail, you'll need to forward your Outlook Live mail (anything sent to @mail.mst.edu) to Gmail (forwarding instructions). This will help ensure that you receive all mail sent to you from campus applications like Blackboard or Joe'SS. All other @mst.edu mail will be delivered to your Gmail inbox when you sign up.

Looks like things are a bit shaky right now... if you haven't migrated yet, I'd say hold off for a day or so. Before, I couldn't even start the migration as it timed out with a SQL error (couldn't connect to DB server). IT replied to my ticket with "We were experiencing some minor technical difficulties. They should be corrected now."

Tried again, and it start going... ~30 minutes later, it appeared to have completed, but a) messages were missing from my GMail inbox (I'll have to try the migration again later folder-by-folder) and b) there were several failures listed (but none that referred to the "missing" messages).

I looked at the status again this morning, and it claims that it's "pending" (whereas yesterday it said "failed")... clicking on the Details link gave me this:

Quote:
Database Error
mig info qry
Show Details | Hide Details
Database Error Details
Database Error Information
Error Code (1146) Table 'gdirsync.messages' doesn't exist
Database Query
Last Query select sum(attempts),count(*),sum(size),status from messages where migid=? group by status
Query Parameters
0: 195

(with slightly better formatting)

Or you could do a little work and use the tool from Google

If you wish to move your contacts and other Exchange data from Outlook, Google has a migration tool available as a free download. This process takes a little longer and requires you to download a Google application to your computer.

I would have to install Outlook in order to do that.

you can get a free outlook 2007 license and CD from the walk-in center.

lots of people dog outlook, but if you are connected to your workplace on an exchange server, there is really nothing else that comes close to working that well. (i'm talking about using outlook 07, not their webmail bullshit.)

Lotus Notes is the most backward, awful email program ever.

From a higher-up in the bowels of S&T IT Department:

Quote:
Most of the troubles faced with the migration tool should be completely resolved at this point. The main issues faced with the system were from initial signups and performance issues. All should be fixed.

Yeah, I figured my migration was troublesome only because I did it early on in the process. As people faced problems, they had more error information to go on and work with Google on resolving the issues.

Tru dat. Then again, I have a feeling my "complaint" is simply a result of being accustomed to the folder management. It's like my initial move from XP to 7; I missed my familiar XP look/feel in the beginning. Now that I'm used to 7, I find myself trying to search directly from the XP start menu at work only to get slightly annoyed when I can't.

EDIT: lulz @ Chankster... e-mail much?

Since I haven't seen this shown w/ much prominence, http://mymail.mst.edu is the url for the gmail beta.

gmail.mst.edu goes straight to the mail
myhome.mst.edu is handy menu for accessing handy stuff like google wave, video, groups, etc

I was getting upset the first day I tried because migration wasn't going so well. I attempted to use the migration tool from google but with 7000+ emails it would always error out eventually. The school's migration finally worked with occasional error but solved itself.

I am really pretty excited; my other two emails I use regularly (personal email I've used since junior high and professional email) will now integrate seamlessly with my school's. I assume this will work amazingly when I get my android phone later this summer.
