Guys,

I received a letter from the USA Scholarship Services out of Washington, D.C. It says it gives engineering scholarships. However, it has a $25 fee. I just want to see if it is a scam or not.

BTW, I googled the name and it never came up.

Thanks.

It probably is. Most financial aid officers will tell you not to send in money for a free information packet.

send them a letter back, but before you stick it in the envelope, wipe your ass with it.

Six signs that a scholarship search may be a scholarship scam:

"This scholarship is guaranteed or your money back."
"You can't get this information anywhere else."
"May I have your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship?"
"We'll do all the work."
"The scholarship will cost some money."
"You've been selected by a national foundation to receive a scholarship" or "You're a finalist" in a contest you never entered.

that came from

I've seen that somewhere else before.

I don't know though, I had a friend that had paid and ended up getting a nice sized scholarship. There's a list of the scammers somewhere though.

But, it's probably a scam.

Any financial aid that is actually going to be awarded to you from either the university or the government will show up in a financial aid summary given to you by UMR after you get your FAFSA processed. Granted that private scholarships and whatnot won't, you will know that you've applied to them and that they're legitimate.

Ive been suckered into something similar, if not the same thing.

Dont do it, all they do is send you a shit-ton (=more than a US ton) of crap scholarship information that you mostly wont qualify for. The ones you will qualify for are useless.

Hope you havent already wasted your 25 bucks.

if you're looking for scholarship info, go to fastweb.com. It was free 2 years ago when I was looking. Probably still is.

I got the letter and sent in the $25 with the info at the beginning of April. I got a huge envelope full of stuff the beginning of May with companies that offer scholarships and how to contact them. Just FYI for all you skeptics out there...

I didn't have any doubts they'd put out; however, I'm willing to bet that all that information and more could have been had for free.

All depends how much your time's worth to ya. (and for being a junior in HS it's not worth all that much--do your own digging!)
