Just heard that they detonated a bomb, USGS is reporting seismic activity, saying they'll know within 30 mins. The Norks are saying they have......... I'll update when i know more.....
UPDATE: State Dept official confirmed the test, less powerful than the 400 kiloton yield the norks were looking for. China had a 20 min warning, they told us about it

I hope the Wii launch isn't effected if Japan goes to war...
but seriously this could become something bad very quickly. How many think that if North Korea is attacked that the leadership would launch a nuke? I seriously doubt we'll attack them, maybe try a first strike but if something became clear like the N Korean goverment was going to be overthrown either by International forces or by international influence that they would betray everyone with a nuke launch.
From what I'm reading Korea is calling Bush's Bluff that we won't act. This may force our hand though because if we don't call it, then we have a worse threat (IRAN) watching what we're going to do about it.

I still have MAJOR doubts about whether or not N Korea could even hit the US. Having a missile CAN travel thousands of miles, and a nuclear warhead, is a long way from having a nuclear missile that can strike a target from thousands of miles. I am thinking if they hit us, it is game over for them immediately unless the could knock out congress and the pres.

They won't nuke the US... read my other article about North Korean Nukes in the news section... I put up a range picture of their long range nukes (4,000 km)
They won't strike the US. If anything, they'll hit Japan, and that's pretty bad for us.
I honestly don't think they have any intentions of using nukes. I figure Kim Jong-Il just wanted to have one to use as a bargaining chip in international talks. He'll probably let it loosely be known that he would consider either using them or selling them to terrorists in order to get things he wants (sanctions lifted, more aid, whatever).

If we nuke North Korea, we screw over South Korea with fallout and what not. Any military response, nuclear or not, will likely bring China into the conflict, maybe Russia too.
I think the only thing that could be done is arming Japan and/or South Korea with their own nuclear weapons, but even that could further destabalize the region (maybe it wouldn't; I have no idea).

I found this pretty interesting...
Quote:
Despite the reported threat, the North's missiles are not likely to be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, and a test firing of an alleged long-range missile failed in July.
and

That's because Western measurements showed an explosion equivalent to about 500 metric tons of TNT
Half a kiloton.... fatman and little boy were about 40 times that and we and Russia had multi-MEGATON warheads shortly into the Cold war....

Theres now talk of the nuke not going off at all, as though it was only the prelim explosion. That would make NK the first nation to fail its first nuclear test. As I read in the comments off another site: Shows you what 50 years of communism will do, now even asians are failing science tests.
