Shit, Wednesday is like the one day I can't get off work this week. I would totally take my only personal day thus far and spend $50 in gas to drive down.

Message over the SWE list serve.
Quote:
Hello All,
fyi… info for Senator Obama’s visit to Rolla: the event will be an economic town hall forum which will be held at the Student Rec Center Wednesday, July 30th at 1:00 pm. The event is open to the public, but all attendees must have a ticket; tickets are free and can be picked up tomorrow (Tuesday from 4-9pm) from the Phelps County Democratic Campaign Headquarters at 905 Pine Street.
Hope you all are having an amazing summer. I understand this borders on list-serve abuse and I'm not trying to promote any candidate, this is just information that was given to me from the student life office and I was asked to pass along to other students. If I get any information about other candidates coming to Rolla, from now on I'll just be posting it on facebook as an event, but since this is so soon and school isn't in session, I hope to reach as many people as possible this way too.

I got there at 3:30 and the line was so long that I didn't think I'd get tickets. After waiting in line for over an hour, I was successful. Sorry guys, no extras - I'm taking my girlfriend.\

This is reason number 4396 why I hate politics. This "town-hall" shindig is set up to where no one but fans of Obama can go, so honestly no questions that could even potentiall test Obama will ever be asked. It will turn into a typical event where everyone is ass-kissing Obama, and every middle-age lady is getting off at the fact that Barack Obama is in their town. But yet Obama is made to look like a good guy, and a friend of the working class simply because he made a couple stops in Rural Missouri.
While I'm still on my soapbox let me say that I HATE politicians, and everything to do with them and politics, so I am not just Obama bashing here. I'll say the same thing if for some reason McCain comes to Rolla. They are all fake hypocritical liars, and all they really care about is the amount of money in their own checkbook. They really couldn't give a rat's ass about you are me.

I agree with you on everything but this statement. How is it 'set up' to exclude anyone? If you were in line early enough, you got a ticket (or two). They didn't comb the crowd for Republicans and boot them.
But yeah, I hate politics. The only reason I'm going is to get some [hopefully decent] pictures. A few years ago I saw Bush throw out the first pitch at the Cardinals' opening day game. Really, who cares? It's just like seeing Billy Mays - a figure-head [of crappy commercials].

Really I'd say that most all these town hall meetings, or for that matter - any political event is "cosed" to the average person. Sure they let anyone in, but how many people are free in the middle of a week day to go stand in line for a couple of hours? For the most part its going to be people who really want to meet Obama. This means people at the polar ends of the spectrum: massive ass kissers, and people who write down a difficult question that will not be allowed to be fielded. So in the end the only people that get to voice their opinions are the Barrack lovers, and the "common man" (or woman) is not even able to go. Now if this turns out not to be the case, and they let anyone ask a question (ANY question, without censorship), THEN I'll be impressed - and recant calling it a sham.
