Google has released GoogleMaps 3.0 for mobile devices that includes a new feature called Google Latitude

Fortunately, privacy settings are very easy to control, and Rolla's resolution area can't really get any more accurate than "In Rolla."

Personally, I think that as long as it is used correctly, it is kinda cool.

Wow, kinda creepy.

Although, having this on your kids phone is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Especially if they dont know it.

It is pretty hard to not know it because google maps tends to be a resource hog, and having constant GPS update on will be a battery life nightmare.

FWIW I have been using this since gogogogo last week so ya'll can stalk me.

It doesn't pull from your internal GPS, but rather "borrows" connection data based on what tower you are connected to. It then uses the recorded physical location of that tower and it's estimated powered range to give the observer an estimated location. GPS doesn't need to be on, and Google Maps doesn't need to be active. When you sign up for latitude, google uses your phone number for a point of reference. Your phone never even knows it was pinged.

I have only dealt with it through the mobile google maps app (3.0.5 maybe?) and I currently have mine set for manual updates only. I don't need people to know exactly when I am and am not home.

I forgot about the manual updates option. That would eliminate the periodic pinging, but it is a setting that is transferred to Google, so it doesn't ping again until you ask it to.

I doubt it, it probably constantly pings your phone. but when you have manual updates on you get to choose when it changes your location

Google is out of money. This is just so they know when you're out of your house so they can break in and steal your shit.

Ya I don't know how this constantly pinging your cellphone works. When I say manual I literally mean manual, like, I select a spot on the map anywhere in the world and say that is where I am.

Since you can choose who you want to see you, it could be handy if you want close people to know where you are all the time so that your family doesn't call you at work to ask what you're up to.

Seeing the manual location option, I bet that at least 80% are just going to use it to be dumb and say they are in <insert exotic vacation location here>.

Things like this don't sit well with me. I was working with a similar project at a major GPS company. I brought it up that not everyone wants their coordinates automatically attached to every email they send... but since it was a major feature of the product, the default was to send your location and the option to change that was buried in a menu.

It was still in development at the time - don't know if things have changed or not.
