The way I understood torrents was they are hosting a tracker that well tracks where the peers are. It can also record each users upload and download information so it is more than just a roadmap.

This is so besides the point. Just because their protocol is legal does not mean what they are using it for is. The argument goes both ways. If it was just a blank site with a bunch of torrent files on it they could almost get away with saying its just a public site to host user torrent files. They have helped organize the files on their servers based on content. If they have done that then they know what the content of their site is and they cannot play dumb. That is where they are knowingly help others commit piracy on a massive level. It may not be against the law in sweden but I can't say that it shouldnt be.

I don't think anyone is saying that using the BitTorrent protocol to distribute Copywrighted files is legal. But, in principle, what thePirateBay does is not illegial. Their... encouragement, (shall we say?) of sharing proteted works is morally gray at best - but its not illegial, nor should it be.

As has already been said, its just business as usual between big media and big piracy. And I'll continue to pirate content until there is a better alternative. $9 to see a film on the big screen and $25 to watch it in my home is absolutely ridiculous.

This is laughable. Let's go with one more analogy. You tell a friend that someone you know keeps a lot valuables in their car and leaves it unlocked, and then you friend steals them. Do you think that is just morally gray?

It is hilarious to hear the new arguments for piracy. How could an act so easy be illegal? When you can something for free I'm sure $9 to see a movie does seem ridiculous. You can keep pirating all you want and so will I but if you don't think it should be illegal or the sites that help you aren't wrong in their actions you are very confused.

Hosting links to illegal or stolen information is illegal in this country. It is merely a strategy to hosts sites like TPB in countries like Sweden. Its no different than having offshore bank accounts, while having an account there might not be illegal but the fact that you have one probably means you are up to illegal activities if not only TAC evasion.

Irony [ahy-ruh-nee]
1. The use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning
2. Having an argument about the legality of sharing illegal files on a seek42 forum

I didn't know because you do something so regularly that it became legal?

What are you looking for to replace piracy. Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Last.fm, MTVMusic, Youtube....all of those sites have plenty of content on them, and yet people still torrent it. It isn't that much easier to torrent files, so I don't see what your alternative is. Also, what service charges 25 bucks to see a movie in your house?

dont have a rental place nearby?

That and I dont know anyone who buys a movie without seeing it first. If you like enough that you would want to download it and keep, why wouldnt you buy it?

Thats my thoughts on flac files also. If you like some music so much that you want it in a lossless format, why dont you respect the artist enough and buy the cd.

yeah, piracy is for trying before you buy....not for replacing buying. and if there are other ways to try before you buy, then piracy is worthless.

Sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead, but apparently the judge that oversaw the Pirate Bay trial was bias towards the movie/music/w/e industries.
