What's next? I get arrested for offering a black man some fried chicken and he calls it a hate crime?
You know.. If those guys really committed this as a hate crime, and not just some drunk prank... then the black community is giving them just what they want by creating this giant stir... If they had just dismissed it as the ignorant and stupid antics or bigotry that it was, I would think it would go away a lot sooner...
That explains that one guy's smirk - he knows exactly what's going on... and everything is going according to plan.
Personally, I think the whole thing will blow over within a few days. I mean, ya, slavery happened. Ya, it sucked. Ya, these guys are being douchebag racist assholes for throwing cotton balls down in the cultural center's front yard, but come on. People are assholes everyday. These just so happen to be the assholes of the week. Next thing you know, the fitness club will be throwing down big macs and whoppers in front of the recovering bulimic house. Or maybe we'll wake up to find soap, shaving cream, and haircut coupons strewn about the yard of the comp sci building.

i guess I've never found cotton balls to be referenced to race. Is it a hate crime to put anything white in front of a black persons house? So if I were to park a white car on their side of the street or something I could go to jail?
I guess I missed that. Are there any former slaves still alive? These college kids (if at all) are how many generations away from that? Sure it is in bad taste, but if I gave a native american a bus ticket to oklahoma I think it would be pretty hilarious. How about putting a pile of diseased potatos on an irish family's porch. I don't think anyone can commit a hate crime for a prank, not even a good one at that.
