I have been printing to campus printers from my computer for a while. I have been using Windows XP with the built-in LPR print drivers. It seems like I have to periodically stop and restart the print spooler service to print. This has happened to multiple computers using resnet, vpn, on campus wired, and wireless (UMR_Campus & UMR-WPA). I have narrowed it down to the this service, but I can't seem to figure out why this happens. O yeah, this has happened on different installs of XP.
Anyone else seen this before? Anyone know of a fix?

Goto Add Remove programs then find the section that says something to the effect of Additional Network Components. Then you install print drivers for unix. After you reboot, goto printer.mst.edu, this has all the printer servers and queues on campus (you will need to find the model number of the printer through some other means). Then goto add printers. Click local printer, select add new port, and do not search. In the port type (at the bottom kind of hidden) select LPR printer, then click next it is self explanatory from here. As some point there was a document on IT's website on how to do it, I'm sure if this didn't help, I'm sure you could find it somehow.
strange....I've never seen that happen on a campus build of XP. Occasionally, the queue on the LPR server will get jammed up and we'll have to clear it, but I've never seen that on a campus computer. I wonder if there's something else in addition to LPR support that needs to be installed.
Are you using printername.printer.mst.edu for the LPR server and printername for the queue?
