Talk to the people in the Bookstore. I am fairly sure that if you get a computer/laptop through them you will get the University discount, even if it is not something that they normally carry.

Also what do you think of the desktop that im trying to get...so far this system on dell.com is only about $1.2k (mainly using it to play nextgen games and design things on unigraphics)
P.S. does anyone know how big the discount is? Dell has a $100 discount on all XPS desktops right now and wanted to know if it was worth it to wait for the possible UMR discount
The only problem with dells these days are that you can't usually get a very high end motherboard, and the power supply is some bizzare proprietary size. If you can get over those 2 things (and the annoying software it comes shipped with) you should be fine. It would be cheaper to build yourself though.
I have looked at all kinds of custom built computers with similiar specs and the individual hardware components and i have not found a cheaper build with this. It comes w/ a 450W power supply with the Nvidia 8800GT. Most computers i have seen w/ this build are twice this price. I don't know much about motherboards, but what should i be looking in to?
Samsung SATA DVD Burner $32 WD 500GB SATA HDD $99 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 $279 Asus P5K-E/WiFi Motherboard $139 Corsair 2GB XMS2 DDR800 Memory $46 (after $40 rebate)
Evga 8800GT Superclocked $289 Corsair 650W Power Supply $135 (after $25 rebate)
Antec P182 Case $109 (after $40 rebate)
This computer is just under $1200 and is BETTER than that dell you built. you could even save a bit of money by going with a less expensive case and lower powersupply if you don't plan to add many more devices in the future.
edit: i tried to configure an XPS420 on dell.com and it appears that they don't even OFFER a 8800GT. the best they have is an 8600GTS

There's a difference between custom-built and build-it-yourself. For example, were you to buy all the same (or better) components separately from Newegg, here's what you would pay:
That's with more RAM, a bigger hard drive, faster disc-drives, and the ability to upgrade instead of trashing the whole thing because Dells are proprietary and a bitch to work with.
Now, the way I set this up, all the components might not be compatible with each other. I just did a quick run-through to make a point. The mobo fits in the case, and the processor works on the mobo, and as far as I could see from a quick glance, everything else is compatible with the motherboard. So I'm pretty sure it all works, but there's my warning.

Don't forget to add $69 for a Bookstore copy of Windows if you like that sort of thing.
