My Dell XPS 2nd generation has a bad video card. The card is thus: NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra

I can't find any place to buy a replacement. I have read that the newer model is the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 type, but I can't seem to buy those anywhere either. IT can't seem to get Dell to give me a quote on a price to get one through them, so I'm kinda on my own.

Any ideas where I can buy one? I'm not interested in buying a knockoff from Hong Kong or something. Newegg and the like don't seem to carry any laptop video cards.

in most cases - the laptop "video card" is actually integrated onto the laptop motherboard. even most dedicated laptop video cards are this way. odds are you won't be able to replace it yourself without buying an entirely new laptop motherboard. you could send it in to dell for service, and they *might* replace the video card - but more likely you'd just be charged for a new motherboard.

Since this has a slightly older dedicated graphics card, I'm going to guess that the usual "you're better off just buying a new laptop" doesn't hold, as this is probably a fairly nice one. In that case - you could look for ones with broken screens on ebay, and swap out the motherboard - or order a new one based on the motherboard's part number from an online vendor. I'd go with the latter since I can't stand ebay.

Well, I've already taken it apart, it's got the Dell proprietary connector that I read about online. I can easily plug it in and unplug it. I cleaned the connectors and used thermal paste (it had none from the factory!) and it worked for a few minutes.

IT said Dell couldn't give me a quote on a new card because I didn't have the original invoice? I went to dell.com and put in my service code, it said "expired warranty, click here for expired warranty hardware help" so I clicked there and put in the service code again, it said "these parts are available" and I clicked on video cards. It came up with "refurbished GeForce Go 7800 Ultra" for $709.99

It is replaceable, I just want to know if there is some place I can get it besides Dell for $700.

eBay?

I got an Inspiron 1525 Bluetooth module from there for a hell of a lot less than what Dell was asking for it.

hmm... a google product search really only turns up a few links, and i'm sure you've already done one. but here's your best option (assuming this is the one for your dell)

$369 at ebay:
