I have a laptop, one day it wouldn't boot. It won't even post boot. I dismantled it, and looked around. At looking at the northbridge, it looked like it had pulled off the board a little bit. I used my finger nail to pry, and gently put some force on it and it definitely is disconnected on some pins.
Since I have nothing left to lose, I am thinking about baking it, like some people do to the xbox's. Just curious though, does anyone have any ideas on to what temperature, or how long I should do this? Should I let gravity pull the chip down, or put a clamp on it?

I dont know about temps, but surface mount devices should automatically orient themselves when the solder paste heats up. Everyone should get a chance to see a Pick-n-Place machine (puts components on PCB) at sometime in their life, they are pretty amazing to watch.

I've seen a few articles of folks fixing their iBook G3 video chip issues by using a heatgun to reflow the BGA.

I tried the heat gun method myself today. After my first attempt it had reconnected some of the pins, and I had different things happen during boot. After another attempt it got too hot and the solder boiled out. Needless to say its broke. Oh well, it was a fun attempt.
