My mom has many vinyl records that she is looking to convert to CD. She doesn't care about quality because she just wants to listen to it in the car. She has a record player. I assume that I would just put the record player to line-in on the computer but after that what is the easiest way to do it and is it even worth it in the end or should I tell her to forget about it? I'm also running Ubuntu.

Use Audacity. They've got some great tutorials on the site and everything. Unfortunately, you're probably going to need an amplifier if you want a decent quality rip. It's also got some built in tools for removing clicks and noise.

The other option is to buy a USB turntable. Then you don't have to worry about any loss in quality in the Amp or levels. The usb turntables though, usually don't come with a great cartridge, so it can sound worse than if you were to listen to it on a normal turntable.
