So, I'm wanting to start looking at how to spend my summer earnings already

The GTX 260's are the most attractive price wise, but the GTX 275's aren't infeasible. I'm just wondering if anyone knows if there's enough better to warrant the ~$50 difference.

Careful, I got bit on the ass HARD doing that. It took nearly 8 months to recover too.

What is the old cliche? Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

really, the only difference I see is that the 275 can have up to 1800MB vid ram. and its 55nm instead of 65nm. Basically means it is clocked higher off the bat. Other than that, it's basically the same card.

EDIT: Just remembered that they updated the GTX260 to 55nm. Also remembered that the 275 has 240 shader procs instead of 216. Also has more texture units and raster operators. I would say that it's worth the extra $50 or so dollars to get the GTX275.

I'd say take a look at this review

http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.h ... VzaWFzdA==

It's of the ATI4890, but the later pages of the review compare cards of performance near the gtx260-275 performance range.

IMO, the 4890 can be had for slightly cheaper and can be clocked to slightly outperform.

Nevertheless
, both the 4890 and the gtx275 basically take turns wearing the crown, depending on the game/app.

p.s. this site uses in-game recordings of FPS values, rather than relying on synthetic benchmarks to determine hardware performance, which I feel is much more reliable when determining real-world performance.

I'm definitely a Nvidia guy. I'm wanting to try out some CUDA apps and Linux support is better on the Nvidia side, so I'm not going to bother w/ ATI stuff.

I can understand some brand loyality, but not to the point of getting a product of lesser quality or performance for equal price.

ATI drivers have been open sourced since 2007 for Linux users and under the driver download page both x86 and x86_64 are options to d/l

Of course, there is the waiting game of computer hardware you might consider.

New video cards are expected to be released by both companies in July. Therefore, waiting/saving for a 260/275 might be a smart idea in terms of anticipated price drops around the middle of the summer when the new cards are released.

Go for the 275 if you're not planning on buying a new video card for a while. If you are planning to upgrade again in say, a year, then go for the 260.

I've got friends with the 275 and friends with the 260. They're both happy, but the 275 really is worth the extra $50 from what I can tell.

I have the 285 and I really like it. I am planning on stepping up to the new redesigned GTX295 this month.
