Ok, relatively computer illiterate here fyi (at least compared to the majority of Rolla).
Anyways, I have heating issues. Video card has uber-failed a few times playing L4D. Unfortunately, my computer is in a not very well-ventilated area, and this can't be altered due to the layout of the room. I pulled the case out a little bit and opened the side and this has seemed to work acceptably enough.
I need Seek's expert computer advice though:
First of all, I need a good recommendation of a CPU monitor so I can keep an eye on the temperature and make sure it's not getting too hot. Second of all, if you have any other recommendations on easy and/or cheap fixes or products that will help keep my CPU and video card cooler then please let me know.
CPU is an Intel Core2 Duo, 2.2 GHz Video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS

The word "bi-partisan" usually means some larger-than-usual deception is being carried out.
This may seem like overly simple advice - but make sure that your computer is clean. If taking the side of the case off helped, that means it's not getting enough air to properly dissipate heat from the heatsinks. Get a can of compressed air and make sure that there's no dust on the sinks, and that there's no dust blocking air intake/exhaust.
If that doesn't help then you probably should find some way to move the computer to a better location. Get some extension cables for your monitor and keyboard/mouse if this is why you can't relocate the computer.

"Better" thermal paste. Maybe an aftermarket cooler, which sucks because you have to spend money. I put an aftermarket cooler on my video card and it cooled by 10 degrees on avg. Or if you have a house fan not being used, point it in the direction of the computer.

QFT
Back when I was desperate, I used a $10 box fan from Walmart for one of the sides to my computer case. The core rarely got above 50 Celsius with that huge fan on it.
