Does anyone know what the deal is with all of the file sharing and/or name resolution and/or (???) problems?
For example, I used to be able to ping computer names and it would both resolve the name to an IP and allow me to connect to their Windows file shares.
This semester, it seems like the only luck I'm having connecting to shares that aren't on my subnet is to somehow obtain the full .device.mst.edu hostname, ping it, grab the IP, and access it via \\131.151.xxx.xxx. If I try doing \\rXXjoeminer.mst.edu, I get some weird "duplicate name exists on the network - change your computer name!" type message (and no, there isn't a duplicate name issue).
So... what gives? Anyone got friends in the IT department that could shed some light on wtf happened?

Usually nbt query packets don't carry beyond your local subnet. The way windows deals with this is to query a WINS server. Check the output of your "ipconfig /all" to see if dhcp assigned you a WINS server to query. If it does come up, then there might be an issue with their WINS server. I don't live on campus anymore, so this doesn't really effect me, but that is a good place to start looking.

Good call:
Code:
NBLookup Interactive Mode
Type 'help' for a list of commands
Default Server: 131.151.247.43
Current option values: timeout=2 seconds retry=0 retries suffix=20 recursion is on (recurse) > cylord1 Recursion is on
