I'm not incredibly experienced with Linux but I thought I'd see if anyone here was.
I've got a VPS server that I'm looking to setup to use as a Socks4/5 proxy. It's got CentOS 5.3 installed on the VPS with a VNC server to connect remotely.
I'm looking to install ss5 ( http://ss5.sourceforge.net/examples.htm ) to act as a Socks server for the VPS's ip addresses. Right now the VPS has 2 ip's for testing purposes but will eventually have a whopping 20+ ip's.
My problem is that I'm not to familiar with Linux and how to go about configuring this. It's definitely something that I can understand... just not something that I'm finding very easy to do on my own.

Why not use an SSH tunnel? If all you want is a secure, encrypted SOCKS proxy, there's not anything you have to do as long as SSH is running on that server. In Windows on the client machine, use Putty and follow these directions: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/security/?p=421
I used this method this past week (well, a similar method for Macs instead of Putty) as I was traveling and staying in hotels that had unsecure WiFi, and since I didn't want anybody sniffing my packets and snooping on me, I just opened up an SSH tunnel to my home machine and configured Firefox to use that proxy. It worked great. If you're using the proxy, your download speeds will only be as fast as the remote server's upload speed, so keep that in mind if the server doesn't have a fast upstream connection and you want to download a large file.
These proxies wont be for surfing the internet... i mean they can but the proxies are going to be used for a few things. All of them relating to gaming.
So a Socks proxie is the only option open to us that we're aware of. SSH wouldn't work for gaming with 20+ ip's would it?
I haven't used socks5 for "darknet" gaming (for ex. hamachi), but I have used a VPN solution. Is this something that you've considered? Was it not feasible? I suppose it would be helpful if you described what you're trying to do, it might help to decide if socks is your best option.

Okay the simplest thing these are going to be used for is connecting to Bnet for Diablo 2.
4 games per ip (limit)
Running Sockscap I need to hold roughly 100 games total. Counting the main IP addresses, 21 proxies is more then enough.
Needs to have D2 ports open for 6112-15 and 4000. TCP/UDP
Why you may ask would I need to hold so many damn games? Simple, in D2 there's a unique charm that gives +1 skills, 10-20 all stats, 10-20 all resist, +5-10 exp. They also only drop when you kill a Diablo Clone (lvl 110 Diablo), which only comes out after 80-120 Stone of Jordans have been sold on Bnet Server (140 diff servers) These charms are worth a pretty penny in the D2 trading sites and of course if you have access to mass amounts of Duped SOJ (which might I add has been patched for 2 years) then you can walk any of the 140 servers.
Grab 100 games on that server and you grab 100 Unique small charms.
That's Use #1
Use #2 is to run IRC based bots used for running a gaming websites IRC needs.
Use #3 is to bypass blocks on restricted IP's for D2 and other games.
I've been combing over the socks5 documentation, and the only relevant entry I could find is in the routing directive.
Code:
route <source or destination host> < <bind address> <group> <src/dst>
that's what you would use to bind the traffic to one of your 20 ip addresses. The only issue is that I can't find a way to force socks5 to propagate 100+ connections over 20 ip addresses in that way. (i.e. there's a 1:1 mapping from source(and or destination) address to a bound address) so socks5 is not a viable option unless you can connect to your VPS with 20 separate ips (which kind of defeats the purpose).
It seems to me that VPN *could* work for what you're trying to accomplish, using vpn plus some crafty iptables/routing magic, you would be able to utilize your 20+ ip addresses.
As far as running IRC bots, I suggest you take a look at eggdrop, that should be able to handle all of your IRC bot needs.
