I built a Win7 media center HTPC for my living room and recently wiped and reinstalled it. Everything seemed to be working fine until I tried to play my movies, they show up in the Videos section of Win7, but won't play when selected.

I minimized MC and navigate to the video files (located on an internal hard drive, different from system drive), select a movie file and try to play it. No dice. Copy the file to the desktop and play it, works just fine.

Any ideas?

Then why would it play from my desktop but not the hard drive? I have k-lite codecs installed

run gspot.. shoulda come with klight... find out what codecs the video needs to play... are you running klight standard, or mega... and are you on a 64bit system... in which case try installing the klight 64bit

That doesn't look like a codec missing error to me. The file has screwy permissions on it. This often happens when moving external hard drives between computers, but more often when formatting your OS drive but retaining data. When you copy it to your desktop, you become the owner of the new file so it plays fine.

Go into advanced file permissions and make your logged in user the owner of the file with full permissions, while your at it, probably do your entire library. Any money says you have entries in your permissions that say S-01-32082370 blah blah blah, because it can't resolve the SIDs.

This. It used to not be a real problem w/ XP, but w/ 7 I've ran into this a few times.

Sorry, I read this to be two separate computers.
