Hey guys, need a bit of help so I'm turning to the experts. My brother is asking me to build him a new computer that will be used for gaming. Nothing too hardcore, so he doesn't need a $400 gfx card or SLI or crap like that, but something that will handle some moderate gaming. I am not really a gamer, not PC anyways, I'm more of a console person myself, so I really don't know what's good and what's not. I built myself a new PC about a month ago, but I was just going for raw CPU power over GPU, so I went with a i7 930 and some cheap $80 Geforce card that gets the job done. To stay within his budget of around $1000, I'm thinking I can go cheaper on the processor (I had a i5 760 in mind) and put that money into the graphics card instead, but I have no idea which card to get for him. Geforce? Radeon? Which chipset? I'm clueless with this stuff. I think he'll have around $200 to spend on the graphics card once everything else is purchased to stay in budget. Sadly, he currently has a laptop, so there's nothing he can reuse like optical drives, case, hard drives, etc to save money. So which card do you all recommend, and will the i5 760 be a good CPU for gaming? And he'll be running Windows 7 x64, no plans for Linux, so Linux support for the card isn't a factor.

The first cancels out the necessity of stating the second.

That is true, although I know some people dual boot and use Linux for everything but gaming.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
3) Where do you live?
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
6) Will you be overclocking?
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?

I can't really help you with specifics, but as far as suggestions go. If you shop with newegg, use combo deals and open box items. I just built a new gaming rig for $450 not too long ago (it would have been less than $400 if I didn't have to get a nice mouse and mousepad).

To give you an idea, this is my current rig:

I was able to recycle my headphones (plantronics), keyboard (saitek), 2-23" acer widescreen monitors (1680x1050), and 2-500 gig harddrives.

I'd imagine with a $1000 budget, you should be able to build a much nicer machine.

Very true, I bought a 1050T+465GTX(unlocked to 470)+4GB+Nice 890FX motherboard for only about 600 about a month ago, you probably don't need near that much horsepower (neither do I really) but that is just an idea.
