fuck ati and nvidia... matrox rules with their open source drivers, and their 2D is a LOT better (mouse themes in X don't 'flicker' anymore AT ALL). playing video's (vob's especailly) used to take ~30% cpu on an opteron 242 (an absurd amount by any standards, NO i was not using framebuffer, i had the right radeon/nvidia drivers for radeon 8500/nvidia TNT2) which now take less than 3% cpu to play at full screen.

PROOF that open source is just flat out better. the nvidia and ati drivers proprietary drivers are crap. wtf is the point of buying a fucking $100 video card if you can't use its full potential. i got a matrox g450 off ebay for $22 (dual head), my next video card will be a matrox p650 or something.

thank you for reading the rant... :)

I personally like my NVidia Geforce Ti 4200 in my desktop machine (3d performance under Linux is freaking awesome), but I have been looking for a dual-head cards for my linux/freebsd boxen in the CS building. I've heard great things about the G450, even though it is a rather old card (~32 meg right?)

Anything else that you'd care to mention about it?

Thanks,
~Krientle

my case might just be an example of the drivers for the amd64 platform being not optimized yet. anyhow, i got the 16mb version, the g400 and 450 (both have 2 vga (15pin) outputs) have these adapters that turn the 2nd vga output into s-video and an rca out, those are maybe $8-10. if i hadn't spent money on getting 768mb of ram and a 242 i might have gone for a marvel etv card, those have a tv-tuners and video inputs along with the g450 graphics chip. the g400 is a 3 chip solution, the g450 is only one chip (and ram offcourse). otherwise, they accomplish about the same tasks. the g550 adds a dvi controller. so, unless you need dvi, get a g450 instead. i haven't hooked up two monitors to it yet, will do that sometime this week. i'll let you know how that works.
