Is the drive physically inoperable or is the filesystem just borked? What filesystem? FAT32? NTFS? EXT2/3?

I've had good luck using Knoppix to retrieve files off of a fubar NTFS partition that Windows refused to work with.

Knoppix is a self-contained linux distro on a bootable CD. It runs entirely off the CD and a ramdisk by default. Doesn't touch any of your hard drives unless it sees a linux swap partition, which it will use.

Fat12? How old is this drive?

FAT12? It's a floppy?! :D

Knoppix is a complete Linux distribution that fits (and remains) on a CD-ROM. It doesn't touch the hard drive unless you tell it to. You can use it to read your FAT or NTFS partitions.

Edit: Shit, GenPFault said the same thing. :P

At least it's coming up as something :) Fried drives are not fun.

Sounds like Knoppix is your best bet right now. See if it can make any more sense of the drive.

if the data is extremely important, and money is no object, there are companies out there (no names come to mind!) that you can send them the hard drive and they will get the data off of it. saw a demonstration where they had a hard drive in a fish tank and i don't know if it was just for exhaggeration or they could actually do it... but... yeah costs a lot though (like a grand) so probably nevermind pretend i didn't say anything

get knoppix from http://www.suprnova.org via bittorrent, or i have a cd you can borrow, in a console, try mount -t vfat /dev/hdXX /mnt/some directory... where XX is hd'a1' if the hd is the primary master and partition number one. 2nd partition would be hda2, for the primary slave and the secondary master it would be hdbX and hdcX respectively.

i would hope type vfat recognizes everything from fat12 to fat 32. i think it does recognize fat 16 and fat 32 so maybe you'll have luck with fat12. and if this is an ntfs drive, try mount -t ntfs /dev/hdXX /mnt/some dir. if it gives no error messages, all your data should be in some dir. post error messages, someone might be able to help.

If you need Knoppix, I have the latest version up on my file server.

ftp://131.151.90.30/Knoppix

Should be significantly faster than bittorrent.
