Damned work computers don't keep cookies for logging in... I finally fell into the A/C trap too.
Anyway, yeah, I'm getting an X800 Pro in a few weeks so I can play HL2 in its full glory. nVidia's 6800 GT looks like a better buy to me, but it runs too hot and requires just a tad bit too much power to function in the small-form case I'm working on.
serious sam 2?!?! fuck YEAH! those guys made a damn fine game. i was blown away by how great that game was for $20 at best buy. the engine was cutting edge too. multiple gravities etc. there were some wild deathmatch levels that involved people running on the ceiling... that is, if anyone ever played it online.
what ever happened to the third encounter? i have SS first and second encounter (one of the few computer games i actually purchased) but i never heard anything about a third encounter. either way i'm psyched!

I loved them too, but when I went the the Croteam site it just said SS2 coming soon, and nothing about the next one.
SS2 is the next one. The first two games were known as the First Encounter and the Second Encounter, so I'll bet this one will be the Third Encounter. Or maybe they'll go the Star Wars route and make this a prequel. Who knows.
no fucking way man. i battled those alien motherfuckers in FE, and then i battledt hem.. again... in SE... and after i beat that stupid wizard motherfucker i got in that rocket, i want to go to their homeland and whoop some ARSE!!!!!!!!
anyway, i have been playing doom2 (the RAVEN levels) for the past 20 minutes. fucking sweet. if you are a doom fan and havent checked out jDoom, you should. i *shoiuld* have it shared. if not, leave a note in this thread. just check out \\gx1327\ there should be doom2 or doom or something like that. download the entire folder. it's GREAT shit.
and if you have played doom2 but haven't played THE RAVEN LEVELS you are totally missin out.
EDIT
hey, does anyone want to play DOOM2? i mean seriously, from E1M1 to E3Mwhatever. beceause i'm in. if anyone out in the forums wants to play DOOM2, drop me a line... my email is pretty close to my seek42 forums user name. i'll hook you up with whatever software you need. but i'm really wanting to play this shit again (man, i GOT to beat doom2 before III is released!!!)
I remember when people first started using mice to control FPS's. It seemed so strange at the time, like somebody using a joystick to play CS today or something.

Speaking of unusual controllers, how do you trackball people do your thing in first person shooters? Seems like you'd have reduced accuracy, unless you had unusually nimble fingers.

Yeah, the trackball people are weird. One of my best friends uses a trackball in FPSes, and he whoops my ass every time we play.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to Doom 3, have been for quite some time now. I heard that PC Gamer or some other big magazine did a review, said that they got it to run very well with a P4 3.0C and 9800 Pro at 1024x768. Now if only I can get my 3.0C to 3.75...the magical 250 FSB. So close, I'm at 245 right now! Anyway, they also said that they couldn't get it to run perfectly with an A64 FX-53 and 6800 Ultra, and that the kind of machine that can run it perfectly doesn't exist yet...

After 3 years of using an optical trackball I can't even think about using a regular mouse for anything...let along FPS's. I find it a lot easier actually...it's the difference between a little thumb movement or a lot of arm movement, it's a lot easier to react a lot quicker. Turning up the sensitivity helps out a lot too...
Sounds like any recent ATI card will play it out of the box. When nVidia's 6800 Ultras first came out, they couldn't play games like Far Cry properly until a game patch was released to fix the "glitches" in the game. The new ATI line, the X800, played the game perfectly right off the bat, though, and has only improved performance with recent driver updates. The sad thing, for nVidia, is that Far Cry is an nVidia "made to be played" game yet took six months after release to play properly on their top-of-the-line cards.
If the same thing is happening with Doom III, it doesn't bode well for nVidia. All of this makes me wonder if every new game that comes out will be buggy on the 6800 Ultras, while the ATI cards take the new games in stride and ask for more. There's a case to be made that ATI is still the reigning champion. The 6800s do have higher clock speeds and get better scores in the old benchmarks, but what does it matter if you can't play a new game until a patch is released six months later?
Oh, and before someone labels me biased towards ATI, every graphics card I've bought has been from nVidia. This time, though, I'm probably getting an ATI X800 Pro for the PC I'm working on as we speak. It's a smallform case (think toaster size) and the new nVidia cards run too hot and require too much power to function in such a confined and restrictive space. The X800 Pro, though, requires less power and generates less heat than the 9800 XT for almost twice the speed. I'd reccomend either the X800 Pro or X800 XT to anyone thinking about going the smallform route.
