In Rolla, I'm lucky to push 3-4 megabits of my 5 megabit connection.
I'm sustaining ~2,000 KB/s here in KC. Lamesauce: roadrunner/timewarner throttles newsgroups on port 119 (default) hardcore. I was getting ~400KB/s inconsistently. Switched over to an alternate port, and now I'm pulling in so far it's awesome

I didnt bring home my computer, but usually when Im home I can pull 6-7mbps and thats the second to bottom package here
Do you not have any other computers in your house? I guess I am spoiled by having both parents work with computers for a living (computer teacher, software engineer) and thus we have 5 desktops and 4 laptops for 4 people. I couldn't imagine not having a computer around me for a week long period unless I was backpacking or something.

Eh, I'm looking forward to my sad, overpriced 5mbit connection in rolla. Since MoState's internet is worse (and more strict) than S&T's, my brother's been downloading like a fiend, and tying up all our tubes.

Yeah... I'd bring floppies to elementary school so I could download stuff and bring it home
Floppies? Try FlashPath with my $40 16mb SmartMedia card. Though I'm pretty sure that start date in wikipedia is wrong. I'll have to check it, but I remember using in a few years before that.

I'm stuck with only laptops. The last desktop my family had was a Compaq with a 600 MHz processor, 13GB HDD, 128 MB RAM (not sure about the speed), videocard? (probably integrated graphics), running Windows 98SE. yeah, I learned all my uber virus-hunting skills on that computer. God, and we had Norton bullshit on that. No way are we ever purchasing from them again.
At home (Memphis, TN), I get up to 900Kbps download in Linux sometimes, and up to 750Kbps download in Windows. I think the Linux one was an unrestricted burst rate. It slowed down after the Comcast assholes registered the fact that we're not premium customers. I think we have the worst package available--besides dialup, which is a total joke, so why am I mentioning it?
My dad (until his company merged into another company last year) would purchase his company's old work laptops that they were getting rid of. Shitty Dell laptops (Latitudes). I still am using one of them. I can't wait to get a REAL computer. These things can't do shit. Using the "Windows Experience Index" test, my graphics card (ATI Mobility Radeon x600) earned a rating of 3.7 (woohoo), and is apparently the worst component on my computer. It can't handle too much, but it's certainly better than the one on the computer I just had. Just last summer I graduated from using a Dell C840 Craptop (Craptop: noun. - Crappy Laptop with an Apple Logo sticker slapped on top). It was running a 40 GB 4200rpm HDD over IDE (Hitachi brand). It had a nVidia GeForce 440 Go (32 MB video ram, not sure about clock speed). It came with 2x 256 MB slow-ass RAM modules (My mom's laptop had two 512 sticks, so I swapped our stick sets). It had a 15" monitor with native resolution of 1600x1200 (how stupid are the people at Dell). It had a 10/100 ethernet and was running XP.
And my Dad thought that was an acceptable computer. Total dick. My sister has to deal with it now. I was tempted to wipe Windows and install Linux to get some speed out of the RAM and keep away from XP's Page Files, but It didn't run too well with the Graphics Card.
Well, I have to go see Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street at Leach Theatre, so see ya folks.
FUCK DELL. FUCK APPLE. FUCK INTEL.

Wow. Sounds like you're more of the "Total Dick" than your dad is. I'm assuming he gave you that computer if you haven't bought one of your own. So quit your whiny ass bitching about it. Be glad you had a computer. If a fast computer is that important to you get a fucking job and buy one. It's not that hard to go through HS and still work. It's what I did and I had a nice computer when I came to school.
