So since the beginning of last semester we have had problems with our fidelity 3mb connection. The speeds have always been slow. We set up 3 appointments with fidelity to come out and they never showed or called. After probably waiting a total of 3 hours on hold from different occasions they finally tell us that there is a some broken equipment in our area and that nothing would improve until they get it. that was before Christmas break and they said it would be fixed by the time we got back. Now we get back and at first all of our computers were getting the "limited or no connectivity". We have power cycled everything a thousand times and even tried different routers. Starting today only one of my roommates was able to actually connect and the speed is so slow that some pages just time out. My roommates laptop will get connection by just plugging into the modem but mine will not Now they say it will be another 2 weeks till we get internet. Is anyone experiencing problems like this, or have fixed a problem like this because my friend down the street says his internet is fine.

We had a problem previously where the modem would would fine for a few seconds after powerup, and then the speed would drop to less than 1000bps and pings would climb to 20 seconds and higher. That was a configuration problem with the modem that their tech support had to fix remotely.

Currently, fidelity slows down to 600k from 3Mbit during any periods of usage, which would be any time during the day you would be expected to use the internet, except before class in the morning. They have sent out a tech, but it hasn't improved. The problem started sometime in October.

Yeah fidelity sucks. Bitch enough and you will get free time. We got our first month free because our connection sucked. They replaced our modem like 10 times before they figured out it was something wrong with the hardware between us and the station.

lol, I used to pay fidelity in $300 lump sum payments back when I had 5mb internet ($75). I eventually dropped it down to 1mb when they upgraded to 512mb upload but they apparently never processed it. 4 months later, they catch it, charge me for it all and say it was my fault.

So i complained, had proof of course that i dropped it down to 1mb, they refunded me the money and I got a couple months free on top of it for all the hassle they caused. Of course they charged me $30 when i changed apartments, even though i hooked everything up myself and it worked fine. They're okay on some things but they're prices are outrageous compared to what people get in cities only 20 miles away.

There are cities 20 miles away?

It's not necessarily a city, but I believe St. James has fiber to the home through Century Tel that's reasonably priced and fast. Perhaps that's what he meant?

I'm hearing about this happening to other people (who are not seek users) who have Fidelity.

I hate cable. Embarq FTW.

Cable isn't the problem. Fidelity is. I have no problems whatsoever with Road Runner back home.

Oh okay....I didn't know St. James had that either until on one of the other message boards I post on, someone who just happens to live in Rolla (small world, isn't it?) had mentioned that he hated his ISP and was annoyed because another town up the highway could get fiber. So I, out of curiosity, went onto Century Tel's website and sure enough, they have fiber up in St. James and other towns in MO.

Since the telcos are getting into the video market, Verizon with FiOS and AT&T with U-Verse (and I think Qwest might have something, but who pays attention to Qwest?) hopefully Embarq will get a FTTP or FTTN service up soon for internet and TV. Although unfortunately for Rolla, they'll probably hit the big cities first and then the small towns. I personally have U-Verse at home and it's great. Much better than Charter was.

I wouldn't mind giving FiOS a try. It sounds pretty awesome.
