I've about lost hope with the pre since I know it won't have much backing. Though google's marketing campaign really is starting to remind me of AOL and apple's approach, ya know, one of the reasons I hate apple and hope that aol never makes a comeback in any form. I just wish that their simple approach to online presence would bleed over to their annoyingly over-hyped commercials. Yeah, I'll really believe that a device that can access the interwebz a little faster will merge with my soul on an existential level beyond my imagination. And to think I've been rooting for them the whole time...

correct me if I'm wrong but does google really even have an ad campaign for the android OS? I was under the impression that the handset makers are doing all of the advertising.

Motorola and HTC are the only ones really marketing Android phones, with Motorola's Droid commercials so prominent that most people think any Android phone is really a Droid. That's pretty good brand recognition, as annoying as it is to try to dispel. It's a further testament to their effectiveness that you assumed the ads were coming directly from Google.

Google, on the other hand, sucks at marketing their own products. A few flash-based advertisements is all they've ever come up with for the Nexus One, and their utter failure at marketing is why the phone was been taken off the market despite being their feature phone, which will continue to get their attention for new updates first.

I for one am glad I picked up a Nexus One while they were on the market, since Motorola and HTC insist in layering Android with their own proprietary crap that prevents Google from updating them directly. When Google comes up with a cool new feature (i.e. free wireless tethering) it's immediately accessible to a Nexus One owner while owners of Motorola and HTC phones have to wait for the feature to be approved, and in turn charged extra for in the case of wireless tethering.

You both are correct. I seemed to have left that part out. I guess google's rep is restored in my eyes. Though like I said, I really haven't looked into it, which is admittedly unusual for me. Though I do have to ask, are there any other manufacture's out there that use android?

Sorry for reviving even though it's only been a few weeks, but Android as an operating system is very flawed and otherwise pretty crappy currently. Hopefully it matures with the Gingerbread release. To say it is better than iOS currently is pretty lol, regardless of whether or not you like Apple. And I say this from a developer standpoint. The amount of bugs and clear lack of testing by Google is pretty appalling and without the help from hardware manufacturers, the operating system would fail miserably.

good to know, but I would rather have a buggy and open/highly customizable OS, than a locked down solid one.

Apple today is microsoft of the early 90s as far as business practices go

Berto, I know you've got plenty of xp on Android... but have you worked on iOS even close to a comparable amount?

Anyone else notice that customizable ringtones disappeared with the iOS 4.1 update?

Goddamn I hate Apple.

No, especially not in the framework since it isn't open. But what I can say, even before I started developing on Android, is that I hit more force closes and ANRs when compared to an iOS device that I've gotten only one unique crash across three devices (this is excluding bugs that don't cause waits or crashes as I've seen fairly decent amounts on both -- I think Android still has more though).

With the loosening up of the app store restrictions, I think iOS will reign supreme for a while. I just read an article about Gingerbread though, and I'm getting more excited about it :).
