So I built this computer not too long ago but was going to wait on the ocz vertex 3 and/or new intels to come out. Well, they are just starting to come out and I'm not really interested in paying $300 for a 120gb drive.

So of the lesser drives, what drives should I be looking at? Or talk me into getting one of the new drives.

Computer specs:
core-i7 2600k, gtx570, 8gb ram, so my hdd is by far my bottleneck

Pro's: Fast, doesn't take up SATA slot or require power cable
Con's: Still $300 (was slightly cheaper when I bought it after Thanksgiving)

Awesome, didn't even look at those drives. I had a gift card anyway to newegg, so I ordered it

Well.. I was going to say wait a bit, because the next generation of drives are coming soon.. Talk of actually using a good chuck of the SATA-III bandwidth..

Absolute fail Cylord.... FTFY

And... it's only $2.34/GB. The drive LB just bought is $2.41/GB, on SALE... so cheaper, and faster. (Newegg listed LB's drive at 470MB/s R/W... the OCZ does 550 read, 500 write..)

But that drive's expensive for SSD's you say? Ok. Let's look at another: Intel X-25M same brand, previous gen. So they've ironed all the kinks of manufacturing and are producing on economies of scale. It's still $1.90/GB. So, give it a few months and the 510 will probably drop hugely in price. I expect OCZ to undercut Intel, so that will probably be more "reasonable."

but the bottom line is.. it's an SSD... of course it's going to be expensive

You quoted the wrong article. And then I went on a rant that was mostly for myself, because I too will be buying a SSD sometime this year.

vertex 3 (not vertex 3 pro, two different drives [interestingly the cheaper vertex 3 is faster]) 120gb models are coming in at $240-250... about the same as what i just bought my crucial C300 SATAIII for a few months ago.

i hope you kept your receipt... 1st generation revodrives offer NO TRIM, NO Garbage Collection. Read: Fill it up once (perform 120 gb of writes) and your performance goes down the shitter.
wait for the vertex 3 or get a Crucial C300 if you can't wait. Only problem is the write speed is mediocre.

Also intel's drives are so retardedly expensive its a wonder anyone buys them at all... great they are SLC's but apparently no one cares about that now especially since ocz has once and for all bridged the read/write speed gap

Yes, that was a problem back when you could buy 1st gen revo's. I, of course, did not.

Newer revo's still can't do TRIM, but that point is mostly moot since the newer SandForce controller used will do automatic GC during idle times (e.g. hit Start -> Log Off and go to bed; wake up and the SF-1200 controller has automagically mimicked TRIM for you).

Well the link you posted was to the first generation revodrive... so if you bought that one, you got one that has no GC. If LostBoyz bought that one, he got one with no garbage collection.
The second generation revodrives are labelled X2

did you get the $410 100gb model or the $470 160gb model?

Negatory; both the original and X2 Revo's have idle time garbage collection (one of many sources - I did a lot of reading before I bought, and then promptly lost all of the links). It's handled by the onboard SF-1200 controller, a component both generations share.

The issue wasn't with the first "generation" Revo; it was with the first version of that generation. The problem was discovered quite quickly and they immediately stopped making the first boards and started a new batch with the fix incorporated; there are posts on OCZ's forums about identifying your board's revision and, if you happened to get one of the old ones, how to contact OCZ to get a replacement.
