Take 53 anyway. There are a lot of people who take it that aren't comp sci's, and i don't think it's any harder (although i haven't taken 73/74) and will probably be better in the long run.

Eh, last I heard some engineering departments wanted you to use that instead, since the software standard to that field is based more from Fortran than C++

Basically, if you're absolutely sure that you'd never want to go on and take any other programming classes, take 74/78. If you think there's any chance you could change major, decide you want a comp sci minor, or something like that, then I'd say take 53/54. Besides, it's one more credit hour.

CS 53 is harder than 74. CS 53 covers MUCH more material, the assignments are harder and you're expected to do more outside of class. CS74 covers about as much as CS53 does in 5 weeks... it changed just this semester. But I think the instructors in 53 are better though :-D
If you aren't a CS major, or don't plan on needing CS153... take 73. If you do take 53, note that it IS for majors...

53 does cover more material, but if you ever want be able to use C++ for anything you really should take 53. My friends in 74 barely covered anything. CS majors aren't the only people who need 53. CompE and Bioinformatics also require 53.
Sea's class is challenging because it makes you think. I would say half of the stuff I have learned so far this year I have learned out of class doing his assingments. I took the equvialent in CS73 in highschool and while it was interesting, I thought it moved too slow, and thus I didn't care much about the class and didn't learn anything more than the class tought. Neither class is very hard because it is very logical and pretty straight forward, although I would say 53 requires a lot more out of class work if you want to do well.
I like Sea's class because a lot of our grade is based on projects we get to design from the bottom up. They have certain requirments of course, but you really get to make it your own.
