So how are CS 397/398 and CpE 391/392 setup? I've mostly heard that companies will submit a project and students then work on them. Can students work on their own projects or do they have to do the company submitted projects?
If students can work on their own projects, do they get a budget of any kind or is it all out of pocket?

In my experience, with Dr. McCracken's CpE design course, he has several faculty or corporation sponsored projects but you are more than free to work on a design of your own. He will usually have the department give you $100 for the project if you need it. You can talk to him if you think you need more.

This semester, there were suggested projects, but you could choose your own if you wanted. Money wise, the department would give $100 per student on your team. If you got the project from a company, they'd probably throw some money at you too.
for CpSci, there were a bunch of projects to choose from, and mostly that was it. One group's project fell through, so they came up with another one. I don't know if they'd let you do your own initially.

For CS, you are presented with a variety of projects and you customize your resume for the ones you are interested in. You are then assigned to a project with a team lead and a customer (some on-campus, some off). Further there is an Academic portion to 397 this semester, where you research the Traveling Salesman Problem. Basically, it's run like a company now (which is good and bad)
