attach it to one of the bicycles with the huge front wheel and tiny back wheel, like in wild wild west.

You could still do the go-kart if you just gearboxed the shaft. You could have the only differential-shaft gokart around but I'm sure you'd get some wicked drift around those curves.
Other options you could take include hovercraft or anything needing hydraulic power, if you can find some second-hand pump equipment. Depending on pump configuration, you could make a pressure washer or if you have an old DC electric motor, you could make a backup generator (pair up with a EE or your dad's electrician buddy on that one).
Go-kart still seems like the best option to me, or else the hovercraft.
Its a 5 HP I do believe, does anyone know where i can get a gearbox type conversion to horizontal shaft, to put it on some type of propelled vehicle, or a simply way to do it myself

If this is the type of engine I think it is, turning it into a horizontal-shaft engine shouldn't be all too difficult. It's just a matter of moving the gas tank so that it doesn't spill and making sure that the carburetor is upright so that you actually get a mix.
if you decide to do a go-kart, get a centrifical clutch and see if you cant find a differential from an atv. then it eliminates having to find a right angle drive to adapt into a horizontal shaft. also, you'll get a way better turning radius then a solid axle. look on rollanet, graigslist, in the local add-tracker for go kart frames (can get one for just a few bucks depending on the condition).
check out the family center for stuff. they have everything you need to make a go kart or whatever you decide to do with the engine.
the only problem you'll probably face is finding a way to reduce the engine rpm to make it suitable to propel the go kart. most likely it won't have enough torque to get you going from a stop. if you can workout a reduction from the engine to the clutch (probably a chain drive works best) then you shouldn't have a problem.
to eliminate the reduction and clutch, a cvt would work great but costs a little more. you're looking to spend a couple hundred on a cvt.
