cmptrnrd16, I want to clarify. I didn't say teaching deer hunting, I said butchering. I think if kids saw where meat comes from, if they saw that every time they wanted to eat, an animal had to die... I think they would have a lot more understanding and respect for the ecosystem. Kids who don't know where meat comes from grow up to be PETA members who eat hamburgers and want to ban hunting, yet don't understand how hypocritical they are.

Gotcha. It seems if you go down that road of doing something in order to understand and appreciate it better you would open up a huge can of worms. I understand your point, but it seems like you are applying the principal too narrowly perhaps. I am hesitant to bring up an extreme example lest I throw off the thread, but it seems like if we are teaching kids how to "kill and butcher" we should also show them how to make their own clothes and even perhaps work in a sweatshop for a week or so to appreciate where their toys and such come from. I agree with your point that it is often favorable to learn how the things you buy come about in order to appreciate the hard work others do to maintain global welfare, but there is just too many things to know and thus it has been (and I believe rightfully so) left up to the individual to decide their level of involvement with the world around them.
