I'm just trying to get a feel for how well people did on the GRE relative to the SAT. You can post scores, how it went up or down, but also how much you studied for each.

For me, I didn't study for either, and my verbal ended up going down by 110 points.

SAT was 690 math, 720 verbal.
GRE was 660 math, 730 verbal. College has made me stupider.

I think the percentiles went from maybe 93 math and 95 verbal to 75 match and 93 verbal. I guess I should write novels instead of going into the field of science. But you couldn't tell that from this post.

I never really studied for either the SAT or GRE. I read the provided SAT booklet with sample questions, and I bought a short GRE book that I read maybe half of in the couple days before the exam.

GRE = Graduate Record Examination I think. Yes, it's like an SAT for grad school. http://www.gre.org

I never took the S.A.T. so I can't really compare my scores but I can say that the verbal is retarded difficult. I by no means have a small vocabulary but the majority of the words used in the verbal section would not be used by even the most educated of people. Study the word lists for a long time (I had a lot of the frequent words show up) and take a few computer practice exams to get a feel for the time involved.

I got a 630 V, 750 Q, 5.0 AW. This was on my second try. Not too bad, I guess. But a lot of engineers are able to make perfect (800) math scores. I actually know a few people that have done it.

The thing to remember is that GRE scores are more of a formality for entering grad school than a qualifier, so I have been told by several people. Also if you take the GRE multiple times they usually will take your highest score from each category. If you get a subscription to US News and World Report you can see how you stack up against the averages for schools in engineering. Average scores for really good schools are 580 V, 770 Q, 4.5-5 AW. For Rolla, 510 V, 710 Q, 4 AW. But who wants to go to Rolla for longer than they have to?
