Does anyone know of any regular poker games or upcoming tournaments in town here? I have been itching to play a game of texas hold em lately. Nothing too high stakes, i am used to playing something like a $20 buy in tourney

not that i necessairly disagree with that, but the way in which it was done is highly undemocratic, although very american. this kind of stuff goes on all the time.

As is the process of blaming Bush for the whole thing. It seems like the whole article is pointing at Bush for banning poker...not the Congress that passed the legislation.

Why does that question matter? If people want to play, they should be able to play.
What kind of cock bans people from having fun?
Umm...we do.
18 y/o people cannot drink.
You can't gamble in Saint Louis without being on the River.
You can't buy booze in Rolla past what 1:30 A.M.? (might just be on the weekend, I dont know)
People can't run around naked.
I don't necessarily agree with it...I am just pointing out that there are lots of fun things that are illegal. Sometimes that is part of the Legislative Branch's duty.

You have control over the temperature, smokiness, and noisiness of the environment.
There is no dealer to tip.
You don't have to wait as long for a spot, and you're waiting in your own home.
There's a wider variety of games available.
There's no loss limit. Though, "loss limit" is a misnomer. In Missouri, there's a "loss limit" of $500 every two hours, but that just means that you can't buy more than $500 worth of chips every two hours (actually, the two hours are fixed, so you can do something like buy $500 in chips at 1:59am, and another $500 at 2:01am, but then you can't buy any more until 4:01am). In any event, any loss limits imposed in online poker are determined entirely by the user.
Of course, all of these convieniences come at the cost of being able to see and read your opponents. I consider myself a poor reader of people (I'm marginally better at reading bets), so for me the tradeoff is acceptable. The only thing I miss from in-the-flesh poker while playing online is playing with real casino chips.

Why would you play online poker anyway?

Why would you be stupid enough to play something so easily abused? Atleast at a real casino, you get to see the person taking your money, and have a chance to catch them if they are cheating. Online poker, you are trusting someone somewhere to be honest.... no thanks.
I am sure scam artists and theives have fun doing what they do, probably a very similar type of high that you get from a really good hand of poker, but that is still illegal (unless you are an insurance company....)

The major online poker sites are routinely audited by third parties. Additionally, casinos make their poker money off of the rake. If you're running a casino, and you manipulate the odds of, say, blackjack, you risk being discovered (and consequently shunned by your customers), but your benefits are a higher take. If you manipulate the odds of poker, you're assuming all of the risk of blackjack manipulation (abandonment by your customers) but without any of the benefits of a higher take, since you're still taking the same rake (something like 1-5%).

Obviously, scams should be and already are illegal. Are you honestly calling online poker a scam?
There are plenty of legit online poker websites that many US citizens enjoyed playing on, including many Rolla students. I am sure it gives you a cheap moral thrill to see legislation that stops people from "sinning" and causes businesses to be ruined, but I don't think that is really the proper role of the government.
How the hell did this become a fucking flame war? Goddamnit, I hate seek.

The word "bi-partisan" usually means some larger-than-usual deception is being carried out.
Sure they can...on any private property with anyone else who voluntarily agrees to see them naked.
Whatever, you have ignored the point. The government does ban things that some consider fun...it is part of their function. If you don't like this particular ban I would suggest forming some kind of protest or political action to show that you disagree with the legislation.
Sometimes the government bans things it shouldn't, I would hope that if needed we could reverse the decision (I.E. prohibition).
