Hello everybody, I was just checking on ways to pay for school without joining the ROTC program. The ROTC program does not pay enough so i can make my car payment each month and does not allow any time to have a side job. Also, I definately did not want to live in the dorms anymore.

I began checking into other options regarding the armed forces, because I've always been relatively interested in joining. I found the Air National Guard, a state funded Air Force reserves. There are many benifits of joining...

-The state will pay for all of your tuition
-Discounts and benifits associated with the air force (you are issued a military id)
-If you choose a "bonus job" you are automatically promoted from E1 (basic airman) to E3 (Airman 1st class) you can also choose two of the following three options:
-----$15,000 sign on bonus
-----every semester that you are a full time student, $650ish/month
-----pay off all of previous student loans that you have accrued

As far as your duties as an enlistee are concerned, you will have to go through basic training. This will be an air force basic, so it is only 6.5 weeks long. After basic training, a short tech school is next to learn your military job. This tech school will count for 6 college credit hours as well. Because of basic and tech school, you can count on missing one semester of school.

On the brighter side, the last time the air national guard was actually partially deployed was back in '92, during desert storm. They try not to deploy those who are still in school.

If you would like any more information or will consider this opportunity, please call me or email me...

How much do they pay you to recruit people?

I'm not a recruiter, I'm an engineer...that's my job description...

An external organization will pay me $2000 per person...which you will be eligible to apply for as well...

I looked into this back in high school. It's ok, if you're cool with whatever job you get after graduation.

Alot of the guys who did this ended up trying to find ways out of the air force due to overloaded bullshit meters.

One guy said he watched the movie Office Space and drew too many direct connections. Looked around and realized he needed to get the fuck out fast.

Military is a big choice, be sure to do your homework before you commit to it.

And, keep in mind, what the recruiter tells you is out the window. When you sign on the dotted line, your ass is owned...

ya, most of that is true, especially about the recruiter...I'm just trying to tell you the facts, nothing more. The air national guard is only one weekend/month though...i don't think that i mentioned that, and all deployments are voluntary as of right now...

It is a huge decision, but well worth it.

Recruiters will give you everything you ask for, but they have horrible memories, so make sure it's on that paper with the dotted line. Otherwise they may happen to forget, and then you're fucked.

I don't want to say anything bad, I just want people to be realistic. If this is what someone wants to do, then by all means, but make sure everything that is important to you is in WRITING before you do any signing....

Ditto what everyone else said.

I'd rather pay full price for 4 years of college than sign my life away.

I completely agree with jthxv, and listen to your recruiter, they will never lie to you....ever....but when they talk about the times that you're going to leave, they will say things like "I'll try to...". But they will not lie..especially the recruiter i am going to hook you up with....

It's the air force...you won't get shot in the face unless you do something stupid in germany or cyprus...that's pretty much the only places we're being sent... and right now, it's voluntary at that

My uncle had to report until he was 45.
