I was just wondering, Im up on the 2nd floor of the library and there is a small group of people yelling and some guy clapping in a room up here, is this some kind of religious party or what? They are being quite loud and its rather annoying, when I came up here specifically to have a nice quiet place to work.

Just FYI: 3rd floor and the basement are "quiet zones" (unless things have changed). If they're being noisy in the "quiet zones", you could try asking them polietly to stfu, or report them.

Yeah, on first and second you can really be as loud as you want within reasonable limits. If they're really obnoxious, though, you can talk to the circulation desk and we'll reluctantly ask them to keep it down.

It's another of those things that make us different from traditional libraries, but if it bothers you just head for a quiet floor.

Yelling and clapping is a little much, but I do group work on the second floor on several occasions. The basement is a great place for queit usually because other than the video classroom no one is down there. And it has a large "personal" bathroom that locks from the inside.

I really don't mind the background noise from people working on projects together or just talking, even in elevated voice levels, but this was enough that I was about 50 ft away from the room, and still heard them pretty clearly through the wall, and it went on for some time, the clapping especially, the yelling kinda went in and out from a few people it sounded like.
Im mainly just curious as to what it was, like a daily religious thing? If so, then Im going to start going up to the 3rd floor, I dont like doing h/w down in the basement, the lack of natural light down there makes me depressed if I stay too long.

Indeed. For all you know, it was a raging party with booze and strippers. If you'd just knocked and talked to them, maybe they would have invited you in!

Oh, my bad, it was me. Im glad that you didnt come in, because we were burning an effigy of Joe Camel in hopes that they would ban smoking on campus.

I'll try to keep it down next time.

Love,

Cory

Is that why the bathroom in ERL has been smelling like smoke lately?
