UMR awards dining service contract to Chartwells
UMR recently awarded a new five-year contract to Chartwells, the university’s current dining services provider, under a plan that includes expanded services and menu choices, new dining venues, a $900,000 investment by Chartwells in facility upgrades and a new management team. The contract is effective June 1.
Chartwells representatives will present details of the new dining services plan during three information sessions today and Wednesday. The sessions are as follows:
5:30 p.m. today in the Carver-Turner Room of Havener Center. 3-5 p.m. Wednesday in the Havener Center Atrium. Representatives will be available to answer questions that students, faculty or staff may have about the changes. 7 p.m. Wednesday during the Residence Hall Association meeting in the Carver-Turner Room of Havener Center.
Chartwells’ planned offerings include two new Outtakes convenience dining venues – one in the UMR Library (with a Seattle’s Best coffee bar) and one in the new residential college when it opens this fall; an Einstein Brothers Bagels shop replacing Cup O’ Joe’s; a Coyote Jack’s Grill in the main food court; and a reconfiguration of the food court to provide more offerings. In addition, Chartwells is upgrading the dining areas at Thomas Jefferson Hall and Rayl Cafeteria, is expanding meal hours, and is investing $900,000 to upgrade facilities.
Chartwells was selected through a competitive bid process by a committee made up of eight students and seven UMR employees, chaired by Jim Murphy, assistant vice chancellor of student affairs.
As much as I hate chartwells, the bit about the new Cup O' Joes, Einstein Bagels, and Coyote Grill actually peaked my interest. I don't dine on campus much (off campus ftw as you said), but the Cup O' Joes in the library sounds nice at the least.
Bunch of crap though. And you know in 5 years, they'll get renewed again. I wonder how much of this is empty promises and how much of it will actually happen.
Although the Einsteins Bagels part did peak my interest as well, Einsteins kicks ass (well, they kick ass when not run by incompetent fucks like Chartwells). Anyone know when that will be going in?
The Einstein Bros will probably cost as much as the real thing, but be staffed by the same poorly trained chartwell drones as everywhere else. But it does sound like a change for the better.

It is to be open by August. The renovations to Rayl and the Library, are also supposed to happen by the time classes resume in the fall.

Why the fuck would you put a coffee bar in the library?
I guess I just don't get it....
Short answer: Mizzou's got it.
Long answer: It makes a lot of sense. People go there and get a drink, and then go study in the stacks. I've seen it at a number of libraries, not to mention every Barnes and Noble.

But it seems like the first thing that should be done is to get edible/affordable food in the cafeteria, then try to do special things like this. I would have to doubt (I don't know, this is just my OPINION) that very many people would actually frequent something like this, PARTICULARLY after the 'new wears off.' Look at the people you generally see in Barns and Noble coffee shops. Now look around UMR. Do they seem the same to you? I can imagine it going over HUGE at an SMS or an MU, but I can't see it being near so big here....

the only dilemma with columbia is that (unless they put it in ellis library and i dont know about it), the daniel boone regional library (county library) is the one who has the coffee bar, and its a private company, lakota coffee shop. plus you have to stay in a small area in the commons to eat or drink, they dont like food or liquids in the study room upstairs or else the library nazis will 'respectfully' tell you to fuck off.

It sounds like really all they are doing is moving what is currently at Cup O' Joe the library then putting an Einestine Bagel in Havener. It seems like it would actually make more sense that way. Having it more centrally located would mean that more people might buy coffee as they pass by. Right now, unless you live in the res college you have to go out of your way to buy coffee there.
As far as 'upgrading' the cafeterias and 'extending the hours' Really they will just be returning the cafes to how they were a couple years ago. I will believe it when I see it. Fortunately I won't have to see it first hand.
