I don't get it. Sunshine law, so I can demand copies of ALL of my professors emails? How does this matter anyway? I have my mail forwarded to Gmail, but there is a copy left in minermail....

Assuming POP3 access remains, GMail has a new feature that allows you to fetch all the mail from your inbox via POP3 and put it in your gmail box. You can leave it on the server or have it delete it. I'm using it right now, and it rocks. Even better, you can set it up to reply as if you are mailing from your umr.edu address. I no longer have to deal with my inbox filling up, and I can search through all my mail in one place. It's amazing.

Wait, can the public demand copies of my emails then? I know that email isn't a secure medium and I shouldn't expect complete privacy, but I didn't know that joe blow could just show up and demand all of my emails without a warrant.

Basically any email sent to/from a UMR address that went to two or more people falls under the provisions of the Sunshine Law. However, when someone files a Sunshine request, only the information directly relating to the request can be released, you are responsible for what is released (so if you don't give out everything, you can get charged for obstructing justice or something), and all emails have to be sent through the UM System Custodian of Records who (in accordance with FERPA) removes all personal information including names and email addresses. And before someone asks, I know this because of the whole the Miner trying to sue the University thing.

Also, you only have to worry about the email forwarding not working if you were using the service that used to be here. And the easiest way to get around it is to login to minermail though the web interface or Outlook on a campus computer and just make a rule that forwards all of your email to another account.

If they are required to keep a copy of all communications what happens when i have to delete a message because of the pitifully small quota?

Has anyone tried to set up a rule in Outlook web access, i cant seem to find it on the left hand side where it should be.

i used outlook in the past and it caused problems with minermail...

i use thunderbird now and i love it... it's easier to organize and deal with.

You can map it really easy for either program tho. It's on the helpdesk website.

Assuming the keep pop3 access, you could continue to use any e-mail client that you would like, if you insist on using a different e-mail address completely here are some instructions.

There are a lot of things they tried to build into the activex version of outlook web access, but they don't work very well, or are cumbersome to use.

-Your best bet, is to open microsoft outlook (not minermail) from a campus computer (it is already set up for you).
-Go up to tools then down to rules and alerts
-create new rule
-start from a blank rule
-select "check messages when they arrive"
-Next
-if you want conditions, select them, for all, just click next again
-select "permanetly delete it" and "for it to people or distribution list"
-in the lower payne click on " people or distribution list"
-type in your other e-mail address
-click ok
-clcik finish
