I've heard some people talk about it and now that I just did my yearly reinstall on my computer and finally have a significant demand for bandwidth (downloading drivers and updates, etc) I finally noticed, that in my greek house using Campus' internet, I have SHITTY download speeds.

Bandwidths tests are putting my bandwidth around 200-600 kbps and i'm downloading drivers from places like nvidia.com or asus.com at like 3 kbps max...

anyone else experiencing horrible issues like this since the new 'IT change' this year we're all paying 50 bucks a semester for?

PS> sorry if this is a repeated post, i havent been keeping up with the forum much this year and havent noticed anything as such

I havent noticed a difference, but I havent been downloading stuff either. One of the guys in my house was trying to get updates, and drivers for vista and it was running slow for him. Im not really sure whats going on.

Yeah the internet sucks this year for me also. I liked it more last year with the quota system, at least when it was slow then it was my fault.

This is a spotty problem. I have had some good days and some bad ones. One of the IT guys was over at my house on Friday and he mentioned that there has been some difficulty with the new packet shaping server. Apparently it is overwhelmed or something like that. He mentioned that the server is having to be restarted every couple of days because of this. He did mention that they are still working on fixing it.

The campus throughput limit maxes out at ~48mbps which turns out to be 6 megs/sec. That being said, it is logical that a few douchebags on campus are hogging said throughput.

Make sure you cap your downloads to a fair speed so the rest of us don't get boned. I usually stay around 100-150k unless it is later in the evening or early in the morning when overall traffic shoots to the bottom.

* Disclaimer: I am not saying this is the problem however it is a possibility.

Nope, that's exactly the problem. There's only so much outgoing bandwidth. Also, the 2 new Rescos were added so there's more people online than there were last year.

Two? I know the RC2 was added but at the same time TJNN was removed and the Collegiate Station has its own connection.

edit: Hmm... that last sentence made me sound like an arrogant ass so I removed it.

At the ACM SIG Security meeting Karl Lutzen said they are looking to get a 3rd internet line for campus (to fix the high demand for bandwidth) but wasn't sure when, just that it wouldn't be this year for sure.

During peek times in the few graphs of the one line he showed us, it was close to maxing the connection (in the evening), while the low time was about 4-6 in the morning.

He also said on top of the throttling, there are basically two tiers you can be in. The first is everyone under a set amount in a hour (from the top of the hour, x:00, till the next; heard rumors that it is 100MB) the bandwidth is for the most part equally divided between this group. If you are in the second group (above the set mark) then everyone in this group shares equally the remaining bandwidth and have a lower priority than group one. So, at the top of the hour you will be back in group one until you go over the mark again. But, there is also the throttling that can affect speed.

sounds like the bandwidth tiers last year were more effective, then. i know there were days i spent too much time on CollegeHumor or YouTube and got dropped down a tier. kinda sucky that now someone could be an ass and hog a lot of bandwith from 12:30-12:55 and then at 1:00 (right about when he should be slowed down) be back "on top" and start being an ass all over again.

So this year I was able to download around 20gb in 15hrs. Also I somehow managed to download 50gb in 7days. I don't think that ever happened last year with the tiers.

Would it even have been physically possible last year with the tiers?
